The Newgate Calendar, at one time, was the most popular title in English homes besides the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress. Originally published in the mid-18th century and subtitled "The Malefactors' Bloody Register," the book was a collection of stories regarding the gruesome fates of the notorious criminals at London's Newgate Prison.
