It is being said that rain is making the cars almost equal so that the driver can make a difference. And what a difference made Verstappen, winning after starting on 17th. A performance of best 5% of already the best in the world. Racing in the rain in F1 comes with a lot of training before, some of them practicing with slick tires in karting to master the grip. It is needed to find unconventional racing lines and find the grip, adjust from one lap to another and be even more consistent. Just one tiny mistake and you are in the wall. In the long history of the #Formula1 world championship, 12 circuits have hosted #F1 grands prix in the #USA. The first was Sebring in 1959, & the latest is Las Vegas last year. Some were/are great; some were/are terrible. In my new #MotorSport column I have run through all 12, describing, rating, ranking, and telling a few stories about every single one. Circuit of the Americas - aka Austin - which hosted last Sunday’s #UnitedStatesGrandPrix, is not my number-one, but it features pretty high. Incidentally, in order to avoid the endless wrangling over if, why, when, and how penalties should be applied to drivers for their on-track transgressions, which thorny issue is becoming an ongoing pain in the backside for all #F1 stakeholders - drivers, team people, FIA people, circuit people, sponsors, journalists, and above all fans - Austin needs a bit of grass or gravel, especially at Turns 1 and 12. Plymouth completely redesigned the Belvedere/Satellite/Road Runner series for 1971 with a handsome fuselage theme. The coupes and hardtops were now quite different from the more conventional sedans and wagons. The two-doors had a low recessed grille surrounded by a loop bumper, flared fenders and a high trunk. 1971 Plymouth Road Runners could be recognized by the “ladder stripe” running down the C-pillars. The new Road Runner Hardtop was shorter, but the wheelbase was longer. Performance was being eroded by insurance rates and emissions issues, and this would be the last year for the high-powered engines. The muscle car party coming to an end, and there were no more Superbirds no convertibles, while the Road Runner and GTX were limited to just one Hardtop model each. Plymouth sold 651,812 units in 1971, nine percent less than 1970, while the industry rose 31 percent overall. As a result, the division dropped from third to sixth place nationally. On a brighter note, Richard Petty came back to drive his signature #43 blue Hemi Road Runner and won his 3rd NASCAR Grand National Championship.
