🔎 How will the multi-reference definition of “Substances of Concern” (SoC) in the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and other EU laws transform your Chemicals Management and Compliance Strategy across various Sectors? The definition of SoCs under the new ESPR is very wide at the outset, but will become more specific and product-focused when implemented as part of future delegated acts. The ESPR sets out general provisions for identifying, tracking, and potentially restricting these and other substances to enhance circularity and wider environmental sustainability. This is expected to reshape chemicals management and compliance programmes in many different industries. Additional challenges arise, as different SoC provisions are implemented under other EU product laws, such as the regulations on batteries, biocidal products or packaging and packaging waste (forthcoming), as well as the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) under the CSRD and the EU Taxonomy Regulation.
