It’s been 10-years since I completed my 23-year US Army career. My last assignment was the J257, The Joint Staff. Opportunities like the one below (to participate in a virtual Army Strategist Association #ASAWargame) are all too rare out here in the land of retirement and leisure. Though on occasion, #CivilianWargaming [CMON Limited (#ASOIAF), Warlord Games (#BoltAction #BlackSeas #BlackPowder) Battlefront Group (#FlamesofWar #TeamYankee)] does have its sublime moments of shared-enthusiasm, near-peer / overwhelming competition, as well as those increasingly elusive instances of wargaming fulfillment/satisfaction. Lately I’ve found this all to be true in equal measure both in loss and victory… though, in losses I can teach more, encourage more, and better strengthen the wargaming communities all around me. Much of this is true regardless of it being while Inwas on Active Duty or retirement, because ultimately wargaming is more about the Wargamer across from you than the game itself. I have found this to be a universal constant. Considerations of Game Mechanics give way before considerations of Gamer Psychology… when games best-approximate the real world they so often model in isolation. Winter Pre-Season As we approach the last lap of our season, with Richmond & Kew Women’s team at the summit of the GLWFL Prem. We look to capitalise on our last 4 games. Having only played 3 games in the last 7 weeks, that gave the coaching team an opportunity to strengthen our area’s of improvement in detail. - How we create in the finishing phase, specifically creating chances from the wide space (Zones 13, 15, 16 & 18). - How we defend in transition (our rest defence). - Our shape out of possession through different phases of play. - Defending set pieces and our roles in transition from set pieces. 4 games to go and still building.
