It’s always tough when talented individuals like those at Humble Games lose their jobs. 36 employees are reportedly impacted by the layoff, and were informed that the company is closing its doors. One question that I keep seeing pop up is, How can a game company that produces successful titles like "Slay the Spire", "Signalis", "Coral Island", and "Unpacking" end up closing its doors? It's indeed surprising, and confusing. But there are several reasons why this can happen... 1️⃣ Even if a game is successful, the revenue might not be enough to cover the development costs, marketing expenses, and operational overheads. Galvanic Games, Inc is a perfect example of this. 2️⃣ The intense workload and stress associated with game development can take a significant toll on the team. Mimimi Games GmbH, known for titles like "Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew," cited a heavy personal toll on their team members as one of the reasons for their closure. 3️⃣ The gaming industry is highly competitive (incase you didn't know), and even well-received games can struggle to maintain a foothold in the market. 4️⃣ Economic downturns, changes in consumer behavior, and other outside factors can also impact a studio's ability to sustain itself. It's a tough industry, and sometimes even great games aren't enough to keep a studio afloat. If anyone affected by the layoffs needs help planning their next move, please reach out. I offer free consultations for those who need it. #workforcemanagement #gaming #layoffs #gamingindustry #humblegames

Video Games Industry is facing an unprecedented crisis. In 2023, more than 9.000 developers lost their jobs, despite the success of major titles. The problem goes beyond layoffs: Many of these individuals struggle to pay rent, access healthcare and support their families. In an industry that generates billions, it's shocking that those who build this wealth are left unprotected. The greatest AAA studies, focused on quick returns for shareholders, sacrifice their teams in pursuit of short-term gains. Emerging technologies, such as GenAI, add pressure and accelerate changes, leaving thousands of workers in a constant battle to adapt or be pushed out of the game entirely. The gaming community also has an important role. It must demand more transparency and social responsibility from companies — this is urgent. Enjoying the final product is not enough, it’s time to value and safeguard those who bring these creations to life. The sector’s sustainability hinges on internal solutions, policies that protect talent, and a more aware community. ■ Are we ready for this change? ■ Can we envision an industry that blends innovation, success, and social responsibility? The conversation is open, and now is the time for everyone to take an active part. #videogames #layoffs #gameindustry #gamedev #gamedevelopment #genai

It's still a brutal time in the video game industry, and I see incredibly talented people struggling on all sides. For those looking to make the leap to another industry, my latest free Medium article covers the way I've approached leaps between industries. I share a specific framework I've used to help me ascertain what parts of my past work map to the role even when the industries don't match. I hope some folks may find it helpful as they continue to look for the best next step. I also hope that my career path illustrates that our gaming careers do not need to be straight lines, and that your experience has merit well beyond your current industry. You are more than your current or former job. Hiring managers can and should consider folks with diverse experience, whether it's a video game hiring manager looking at folks from outside the industry, or someone outside video game development looking at the incredible variety of skills these folks can bring to your teams. I'm rooting for everyone who continues to be affected in these turbulent times. May the rising tides lift all of our ships. #career #videogames #gamedevelopment #gamedev #layoffs https://lnkd.in/g77iJ-n4

- On Layoffs - Thinking of everyone impacted by the recent layoffs at "Firewalk Studios" and others. For those who worked there, it’s not just about the projects or the studio; it’s about the friendships and collaboration that grow from working together. These connections, built on mutual respect and support, and the dedication each person brought to the team truly matter. Behind every title is a team that has faced long hours, tight deadlines, and the sacrifices that come with crunch time. Many friends have poured their hearts into building something meaningful, often at the expense of their personal lives. While the reception of "Concord" may not have met expectations, it’s important to remember that this does not reflect your talent or commitment for many in the studio. Many challenges in game development come from systemic issues, not from individual efforts. We must talk about and acknowledge the gaming community's right to voice their opinions. As developers, we must listen. Even when commentary can be harsh or even toxic, we should engage with care, recognizing both the community’s passion and the hard work of developers. We are all gamers looking for meaningful experiences, and constructive feedback can lead to growth. Together, we’re all part of the same community; gamers and developers are not opponents. To those impacted, your talent and resilience speak louder than any title. It’s crucial for us to shift our mindset: studios and workplaces should be viewed as jobs, not as the core of our lives. We invest our time and energy into these companies, and it’s vital that we are treated with respect as professionals. This means establishing boundaries that allow us to maintain our personal lives while delivering quality work. Our contributions should be valued for what they are, our skills and dedication; without sacrificing our well-being. I will post links of some friends in another post later today. If anyone has opportunities for skilled developers, artists, and creators, please reach out. Let’s connect and help them find new paths. Here’s to supporting one another and building a better future for our industry. Together, we can create an environment where everyone can succeed and have fun playing games. #SupportGameDev #GamingCommunity #GameDev #GameArtists #GameArt #PlayStation #NewOpportunities #GameDevJobs #SupportGamers (Sorry took me a bit to post on this recent Layoff, I needed time to internalize what I wanted to say in a constructive way, I hope I did ok with the post. Internally I am tired and allow me again to say pissed of seeing friends suffer whom I know are great developers. While I understand why this needed to happen, I cannot help having feelings on this for friends, and the families of those friends.)

Take Two is cutting staff and canceling projects while they wait for GTA6 to come out. They seem to be undertaking a year of efficiency not unlike Meta's in 2023. Sigh. I had hopped that Take Two was better than this. ----- Feb. 6, 2023: GamesIndustryBiz: "Take-Two misses sales guidance, downgrades forecast again. Zelnick says shortfall isn't on developers as publisher looks to trim expenses without sweeping layoffs" GamesIndustryBiz: https://lnkd.in/gtSUr4sy Feb 8, 2024 : IGN: "Take-Two CEO Says They Have 'No Current Plans' for Layoffs Amid Cost Reduction Program. Strauss Zelnick says they "haven't put any meat on the bones of" the cost reduction plan quite yet." IGN: https://lnkd.in/gM7tgBMA March 7, 2023 GamesIndustryBiz: "Take-Two cuts jobs at Private Division Publisher says impact on US dev teams is minimal, and it has started legal processes outside of US that could result in further layoffs" GamesIndustryBiz: https://lnkd.in/gRTN67MU March 28, 2024 GamesIndustryBiz: "Take-Two to acquire Gearbox from Embracer for $460 million. Randy Pitchford to remain leader of the Borderlands developer" GamesIndustryBiz: https://lnkd.in/g8_b7pwz April 17, 2024 GameDeveloper: "Take-Two is making layoffs weeks after dropping $460M on Gearbox Interactive. The publisher will spend up to $200 million on a cost reduction program that will also include project cancellations." GameDeveloper: https://lnkd.in/gV97WPwr ----- April 17, 2024 GamesIndustryBiz: "Take-Two laying off 5% of staff. In addition to approximately 580 jobs cut, publisher's latest cost reduction program also involves cancelling projects, streamlining organizational structure" ( Brendan Sinclair) (April 16, 2024) "Take-Two Interactive is embarking on another cost cutting program, and this one will see the company layoff about 5% of its employees by the end of the year. "As part of these efforts, the company is rationalizing its pipeline and eliminating several projects in development and streamlining its organizational structure, which will eliminate headcount and reduce future hiring needs," Take-Two explained in an SEC filing stating that the board of directors approved the new program today. In its latest annual report, Take-Two reported having 11,580 full-time employees, which would put the layoffs at approximately 580 people. Take-Two expects the cost reduction program to cost up to $200 million, with as much as $140 million in charges coming from the cancelled games, up to $35 million in employee severance and similar charges, and as much as $25 million more in office space reduction expenses. Take-Two has posted net losses for seven straight quarters. Its last quarter reporting a net profit was the three months ended June 30, 2022, the quarter before the publisher closed on its acquisition of Zynga." CONGRAGULATIONS Blizzard Entertainment!!! This marks nearly 1 THOUSAND protected jobs!!! 🥳 As reported by my friends yet AGAIN at IGN Entertainment, Over 500 employees under the banner of Microsoft have UNIONIZED!!😆 How does this help? 👀 🤝 Preventing more Layoffs. Earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment had announced the firing of nearly 2 THOUSAND developers. With Unions, We can better ensure something like that won't happen again. (Editor's Note! There's a lot of conflicting information regarding whether or not a Union can assist in preventing layoffs. What I'd like to say is that with Unionization, at the very least it can allow those involved the opportunity to better discuss severance packages, as well as better protect employees for being fired without a 'just cause'. While it doesn't fully stop a company from outright firing anyone, Unions definitely do grant Employees a voice which they may have lacked prior. Thank you everyone for sharing their thoughts and for wisdom. Like many, I'm still learning, and appreciate being able to view both Pro and Anti Unionization debates that remain civil, while also correcting any misconceptions I may have regarding the topic as a whole. 😄) 🏳️🌈 Better Equality. With layoffs having included a good portion of DEI departments, Unionization can assist with making sure marginalized groups including Trans, Gay, or Non-Binary developers don't lose their voices, while also working to preserve DEI efforts across the board. 👫 EVERYONE WINS. Did you know research shows how Non-Union employers often INCREASE wages in order to encourage those working for them to stay? More competition means a more fair wage for all developers. It's time to put an end to low-ball job offers. With less than a week having passed since Bethesda Game Studios' Unionization, it seems this history-making decision may have caused what's to become the next trend for our Community! LET'S. PROTECT. OUR. LIVELIHOODS. 👏 I'm so happy to call these changemakers my friends. ❤️ Alexander Rehm Ali Farha Ayla Derrick Brianna Doe Caitlin Cooke Eva Tucker Justin Williams Kat Craig Mika Dilig Tommy Foo Willem Delventhal We can be the change we want to see!!! ✊ Epic Games and Unity, it's time to talk.
