[FACTSHEET] 🌿🌍 The Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI), a pivotal project facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Greifswald Mire Centre, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is dedicated to the sustainable management of peatlands in key tropical countries including the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the #Congo, #Indonesia, and #Peru. This collaborative effort aims to mitigate the impact of drained and degraded peatlands on the global climate by embedding sustainable practices within national action plans and strategies, ensuring the long-term preservation of these vital ecosystems. Under the GPI, significant strides have been made in assessing, measuring, and preserving peat carbon. Key outcomes include the development of national peatland definitions, the integration of peatlands into climate action plans, and the enhancement of technical capacities for peatland management. This initiative not only focuses on environmental benefits but also promotes social and economic well-being through sustainable livelihoods, engaging a broad spectrum of governmental and non-governmental partners to foster a collective response to environmental challenges. As we continue to advance our understanding and management of peatlands, the results of the GPI are crucial for global efforts to combat climate change and enhance biodiversity. We invite professionals and stakeholders interested in sustainable environmental management to explore the detailed achievements and ongoing efforts of the GPI. Join us in promoting sustainable management practices that benefit both the planet and its people. Thank you Qiyun Woo (胡绮芸) for this post. We we’re a part of the APNED consultation. Looking forward to July when it comes to KL. Here’s the thing. Why is it that government and business is always at odds with civil society when it comes to the environment? Do you ever get the feeling that there is a sinister and insidious plan by them to pull wool so they can pillage and plunder unchecked? For who’s gain? Definitely not ours. Who then? And you are right when you say we have to care. Because we can see already how the climate disruption is creating chain reactions in markets and economies regionally and globally and those two things can do far more damage to the resilience of our peoples everywhere ( we don’t consider government and business as peoples because they seem hell bent on living, cheating and stealing from us at every turn ) than immediate disasters. What’s the point of surviving if we can’t survive after we survive? #resilience #solidarity #communities #communityactionnexusberhad #honestesg
We need to protect our ecosystems, and we also need to protect the environmental defenders who are custodians and stewards of this land. This #WorldEnvironmentDay's theme is on land restoration, and I needed to share two initiatives that would benefit from everyone's support. A few days ago, Singaporean environmental groups The Weird and Wild, Singapore Youth for Climate Action and Energy CoLab published our little statement of support for Masungi Georeserve's campaign to #SaveMasungi. Masungi Georeserve has been dubbed an 'ark of biodiversity' in The Philippines by the World Economic Forum but they also face intense challenges to their conservation work, which sometimes includes drilling operations of clean energy projects. We know that managing our green transition is not easy, and people often wonder why we should care as Singaporeans. But I struggle to see why we shouldn't, when what affects us in one place affects us all as our climate is connected. I hope you can (as individuals or organisations) support their calls to #SaveMasungi be it through echoing their calls or even paying a visit to see how beautiful this place is. Check out Ann Adeline Dumaliang and team's work here https://lnkd.in/guAz3k4R I'm also not forgetting the tireless work of many Southeast Asian youths who are advocating for the protection of environmental defenders as part of the ASEAN Environmental Rights Working Group. But this work is not without it's challenges, and I highly recommend that you give Max Han's post a read: https://lnkd.in/g5ZtRzsN Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to be living in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, on land and in our waters. For those who dive (on my bucketlist to learn!), I'm sure many of you can vouch for this. I'm proud to be here as a Southeast Asian environmentalist working alongside these amazing people to protect the lands in our region. We might be islands, but we are never alone. ❤️ (A lesson from my burnout post, thank you everybody who checked in, sent me tips and also virtual hugs. I appreciate them all!) Credits! Thank you to the SYCA team for working on the caption for our Instagram post on #SaveMasungi and Rachel Cheang for co-illustrating this with me.

🌍 How can the Caribbean become a leader in environmental stewardship and equitable societal progress? 🌍 The answer is not just about GDP, but about comprehensive wealth, nature-positive actions, and robust governance. 💯 In this week’s column, I share a holistic strategy for Caribbean sustainability, integrating the latest frameworks and standards from Nature-Positive, IUCN, SDG, ISO, and the Capitals Coalition. 🙌 It feels odd to write about this on Carnival Thursday. I think and work with this all year long... and Carnival brings out a different energy and different connections and I am sure I am not utilizing the whole potential here. Nevertheless, here is one attempt at an integrated approach. There is a special focus on biodiversity because of the urgency and the recently published standards. An integrated strategy empowers governments, businesses, and communities to: 1️⃣ Assess their ecological footprint and biodiversity dependencies using the natural capital protocol 📊 2️⃣ Implement governance structures in line with ISO 37000 to ensure decisions are effective, ethical, transparent and measurably contribute to sustainable development 🧭 3️⃣ Develop and integrate corporate strategies with the SDG Impact Standards to operationalise and achieve ambitious sustainability targets 🎯 4️⃣ Adopt nature-positive actions that enhance biodiversity and contribute to ecosystem resilience 🌱 5️⃣ Report, engage, and account using the latest specialized disclosure standards, such as TNFD and GRI 101 Biodiversity 2024.
