Today is the day. A once-in-a-generation vote that we are so honoured to have played a part in at John Doe. It’s a complicated, nuanced and, for many, uncomfortable subject. But having spent the past couple of months sitting with hundreds and hundreds of incredibly moving personal stories, I’m more convinced than ever. Assisted dying should be legalised. Over the past few days, we’ve had our Dignity in Dying adverts - featuring real people, brave enough to share their powerful personal stories - vandalised. But they’ve also been featured across every single major media title, and talked about positively by those who welcome change, creating a important focal point for the debate. If you’re just joining the conversation now, here are some things to know: 🩷 contrary to what the opposition will tell you, this is not assisted suicide. This is assisted dying. It’s for people who are terminally ill, with less than six months to live, who do not want to suffer. 🩷 the argument is for choice. For many people who are terminally ill, fearing the end is a huge anxiety. It will be a comfort to know that they have the option to control the end of their lives. But it does not mean that they will, or have to, exercise that choice. 🩷 if MPs vote positively today, that is not the end of the story - it’s the beginning of a long, layered legal journey, where safeguarding and practicalities will continue to be crafted. 🩷 the overwhelming majority of the British public want this Bill to pass - a majority across every constituency. It’s been emotional. But I wholeheartedly hope today brings change. And I hope that change is choice.
Congratulations to you and the team on all of your work. We've been working - at Be Broadcast - on a campaign with an author who is opposed. He signed up to Dignitas after watching family members suffer and then began writing a book about it, but ultimately changed his mind after seeing some of the challenges. What has been eye-opening - and really positive - is the level of reasoned debate. This is so incredibly emotive but it hasn't sunk into battlegrounds. I think it has been fought with dignity - which has made a huge difference in helping bring minds together.
Great work for a very important cause.
So proud of all you do all the time - but extra proud of your unwavering commitment and energy in driving this campaign. What a phenomenally important day. ❤️
Not to be underestimated in terms of its importance and the far reaching consequences, proud of you for your compassion, sensitivity and brilliance. Regardless of the outcome this has brought some very important stories and issues to the fore. I for one was prompted to have some critical discussions with my loved ones.
this is the important work and Pamela Scobbie and team have given this their total heart and soul. Not an easy topic at all but executed with care, creativity and conscience. This is when our industry can make real change. well done all xx
Great work Pamela, on a very difficult and sensitive subject. Must have been very emotional for the team.
