PERSPECTIVE PUBLISHING #MSWL for the 2025 Calendar Year OPEN SUBMISSIONS through OCT 1, 2024 (12:01 EST -5 GMT) LENGTH: 78K-126K words GENRES: Historical Romance, Espionage Thrillers, YA Mystery, Juvenile Mystery, Alt History We are a Traditional Publisher We offer "Nice Deals." Be aware that we work with talented, developing authors that we feel are overlooked by the big five publishers and most literary agents because it is not necessarily what the more prominent publishers want to add to their list, but we are. With a bit of work and our help, these authors have what is needed to become bestselling authors, and it is in our best interest to help authors achieve that. We welcome agented and un-agented submissions this year and have the same exacting standards as larger publishers. While we do not pay a lot, we do not charge authors as many hybrid or "vanity" presses do. We pay them. We cover the cost of a good cover, an extensive editorial process, enhanced distribution, and marketing. While our offers are nowhere near what you could expect to see from a more prominent publisher (you won't get rich or even make an annual income from our advances), we do pay more to authors than most self-published authors make on their own in their first two years and cover the costs associated with the cover, editing, distribution, and marketing - and we pay an advance. We are open to small print runs but do print-on-demand publishing. We also cover the cost of the copyright. Rights are generally negotiated for 30 years, and unlike many small publishers that require all the rights to your book, the rights we ask for are specified and not all-inclusive. DIRECT SUBMISSIONS: Submit a query letter in the body with 1st chapter as a Word or .pdf attachment to submissions@perspectiveliterary.com In the SUBJECT LINE of the e-mail, include ONLY: [author name - title of the book] 1) Address all queries to our acquisitions editor (Kara L'an) with title/genre/word count and appropriate contact information in the header. This query letter should interest us in reading your 1st chapter and should tell us that you know your book, market, and target audience (where it would end up on a shelf in the bookstore or a library). Include your pseudonym(s) if you are not writing under your real name. Your query should be no more than 350 words, and spend 150-200 telling us why we should be interested in publishing your book (besides the fact that you are a great storyteller and yours is the best story ever written). Our editors are also mostly authors, so...stick to the story. If you have published anywhere in the relevant genre, please itemize the titles and where they have been published directly beneath the header. Please don't include this in the body of the query letter. We ask that you focus only on the book you are pitching. 2) include the first chapter as a .doc or .pdf attachment in an email attachment. The file name should be descriptive – author name/genre/logline.

You wrote a book. Now what? Independent Publishing Series - Post #2 ℹ The different methods of publishing ℹ PART ONE Before I start talking about indie publishing, I must mention that there is no correct way of publishing. Everyone has their own path and you can choose. Several, indeed. You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to do a bit of both. And you are also allowed to just focus on one method. However, first, you need information. Which form of book publishing is right for you? 1) *Traditional Publishing* In the English-speaking word, it usually goes like this: you write the book, polish it to the best of your abilities, then start querying literary agents. Once an agent decides to represent you (this is usually a slow process with lots of rejection letters involved), they will query editors at publishing houses. This is where I need to mention (for the first, but not the last time!) that book publishing is a business, so even if you wrote something brilliant, if they think they can't find a market for it, they won't pick your book. So sometimes it's not the writing, but the marketing. Don't be disheartened. Once an editor loves your book (again, this is oversimplified here), then comes the contract, the agent negotiates on your behalf (the agent will get paid out of your advance/royalties, so you don't pay anything upfront), then you start working together with the editor at the publishing house. Traditional publishing usually offers an advance, which varies, and you need to earn out before they start paying you actual royalties, which are usually a smaller % than in the indie publishing world. The publisher has control over the cover, the title and yes, they can even tell you to change certain parts of your book if they think that works better for the market. You give up most of the creative control. They might help you a bit with marketing/promotion, but don't think that, as a debut author, you will get a marketing team with a big budget supporting you. Unless you're a celebrity or already a big name in your field of profession. In Hungary, you query the publishing house / editor directly. There are literary agents in Hungary, but they don't represent authors, they usually deal with foreign rights, etc. I think I already talked too much about trad pub here. Joke is on me; I continued this post but ran out of the character limit (no wonder, haha). I tried to make this as short as possible, but there *are* some things I needed to tell you. Further reading: https://lnkd.in/dU9RwBkj To be continued next week! 😎 Let me know in the comments if this post was useful to you or if you had any experience with traditional book publishing! Should authors hire an attorney to look at their publication contract before they sign? Yes, and no. YES, because often authors get so excited to get picked up by a house that they just signed on the dotted line without ensuring rights to their own property and work, and only realize later what they gave away. Sure, the law gives you rights to your own intellectual property and affords you protections, but all of that means little when you sign to give the exclusive rights to that property to another entity. Think of it like this: You own the copyright to your work, but you have given the exclusive rights to reproduce that work to a third party, so you only “own” it intellectually, but in practice, someone else has all rights to distribute it. A publishing attorney can ensure a measure of fairness, make sure your rights are protected, and that you have some recourse in the event things go belly-up. Some publishers and editors don’t like attorneys because they can at times over-reach, but that’s what negotiations are for: ensuring fairness. NO, if the attorney you ask to help you is not specifically a publishing attorney. Publishing is an entire world unto itself with its own factors and limitations, and unless the attorney has specific experience with and within publishing, they will not really be able to negotiate effectively on your behalf. In some cases they may even jeopardize things. Decades back, I once assisted an editor who was trying to sign an author based in Hollywood. This Hollywood author brought in an entertainment lawyer to negotiate on her behalf. This lawyer treated the publishing contract the way they would have a music or film/television contract and insisted (rather brashly, as I recall) on things that may well have made sense in music or film but were patently ridiculous in publishing. The editor was so taken aback that he rescinded the offer completely. This happens more than you know. Always go with a publishing lawyer if you can. If you, for whatever reason, are unable to get someone, let me know and I will do what I can to help. #publishing #books #authors #writing

Recently we asked writers what they thought of vanity press publishing. Some say vanity presses exploit writers’ dreams by charging excessive fees. Others argue they provide an alternative path in a tough industry. What’s your take? There were a lot of responses to this hot button topic. Very interesting article in The Telegraph by Ian Winwood about self-publishing: Self-publishing, once as reputable as pornography, is now the preferred – and most profitable – option for aspiring authors. Why? "In other words, in the 21st century, aspiring authors no longer need to write a 10,000-word proposal in order to whet the appetite of a commissioning editor at a traditional publishing house. According to [Hugh] Howey, increased opportunities in the independent sector mean that 'many successful self-published authors have moved away from traditional publishers to go it on their own. Many don’t even try that route. [Increasingly] publishers will have to compete for manuscripts by offering better services, like monthly payments, better royalties, lower e-book prices, and a myriad of things they’d prefer not to do.'” "Out in the wild, the most successful independent authors tend to be those who have got the hang of self-promotion. While some are able to afford online marketing in the form of pop-up adverts and the like, others have harvested rich pickings without spending a penny. In particular, BookTok, a sub-committee of TikTok, has revolutionised the art of the hustle, with writers such as Rebecca Yarros and Carley Fortune selling hundreds of thousands of copies on the strength of short videos." https://lnkd.in/eDxPxZWe

This week Ewan and I totaled up the volume of business that Philip Turner Book Productions conducted in 2024. I’m pleased to note the figures confirm how it felt while we were working—it was a very productive year for the joint editorial consultancy and literary agency I founded in 2009, for which Ewan became my business partner in 2020. There's a nearly 2000-word post linked to below which I hope you'll read, but here are the basic figures, *On the editorial side, we worked with a total of eighteen authors, editing manuscripts and book proposals, and consulting with them on a number of different book ideas; *On the agency side, we made ten new deals with book publishers and audiobook publishers for titles that will be published in 2025 and beyond; we are currently submitting a number of the above book proposals—such as narrative nonfiction about domestic violence, a biography of one of Major League Baseball’s greatest player-managers, and a novel in stories about surreal New York by Ewan, writing as M. G. Turner; * With a backlist of author clients whose books the company began licensing over a decade and a half ago, we also paid out advances and ongoing royalties from various publishers to seventeen different authors and rights holders. Please click through for more detail, including on the books our clients published in 2024, and the creative work we both did last year. And, remember, if you or anyone you know has a book idea you want to discuss, please query us at ptbookproductions[@]gmail[.]com. #publishing #editing #agenting
