Ever wondered what it takes to pull off an international sporting extravaganza? Eight years ago, I embarked on an unforgettable journey as the executive producer of an international sporting event that gathered athletes from the United States and Japan in the Philippines for a weekend of all-star ultimate frisbee showcase games. This project transcended mere tournament status; it etched itself as a milestone within the sports history. The process entailed orchestrating a diverse ensemble, ranging from athletes and coaches to national governing bodies, sponsors, and media production teams. It was a collaborative effort that necessitated the collective expertise of an entire village, meticulously woven together within a year of preparation. As you can imagine, coordinating the participation and cooperation of so many stakeholders demanded a complex and delicate approach. As the executive producer, my lines of communication buzzed incessantly—phone and email alike—24/7 for months on end. Allow me to offer a glimpse into the pivotal elements that shaped this monumental event: - Crafting a comprehensive plan to execute an international sporting extravaganza involving at least 50 individuals spanning three different countries. - Establishing multiple channels of communication to seamlessly interconnect various departments. - Developing a concept that seamlessly blended entertainment with realism. - Collaborating with stakeholders to procure support for every facet of the venture, spanning flights, accommodations, catering, venue arrangements, permits, media production, and live streaming. This endeavor stands tall as the most ambitious and complex project of my career. Yet, with challenge comes reward. Along this exhilarating journey, invaluable lessons were learned, and enduring relationships were forged—a testament to the transformative power of collaborative effort. #EventProduction #SportsManagement #GlobalCollaboration Highlights courtesy of @PhilippineUltiverse:

The Paris Olympics opening ceremony video was removed from official Olympic accounts following dissatisfaction from C Spire, a major sponsor. The ceremony, notable for its unprecedented setting along the Seine River, was intended to showcase French culture and innovation. However, C Spire’s concerns about the content led them to withdraw their support, prompting the video’s removal. The decision ignited a firestorm on social media, with many users expressing frustration over what they perceived as undue corporate influence over an event of cultural significance. Critics argued that the removal was a setback for transparency and artistic freedom. The video’s absence was seen as a capitulation to corporate interests, overshadowing the celebration of global unity and cultural expression that the Olympics represent. C Spire’s withdrawal highlighted the growing influence of sponsors in major events. The company cited a misalignment with their brand values as the reason for their departure. This decision not only disrupted the promotional activities but also underscored the delicate balance organizers must maintain between satisfying sponsors and preserving the integrity of the event. Athletes and celebrities involved in the ceremony voiced their disappointment, emphasizing the ceremony’s role in highlighting cultural diversity and artistic talent. The removal was seen as a loss of a moment meant to inspire and unite people worldwide. The backlash from athletes underscores the importance of maintaining the cultural essence of such global events, even amid corporate pressures. The controversy surrounding the removal of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony video underscores the complex relationship between corporate sponsorship and artistic integrity. It raises essential questions about how to navigate these relationships without compromising the cultural and artistic value of global events. As we move forward, this incident serves as a crucial reminder of the need to preserve the cultural significance of the Olympics while balancing corporate interests. This situation, while unfortunate, provides a valuable lesson in the importance of maintaining transparency and prioritizing cultural heritage in global events. The dialogue between corporate interests and cultural significance will continue to shape the future of such events, highlighting the need for a careful and thoughtful approach. #Olympics2024 #Paris2024 #CulturalHeritage #ArtisticIntegrity #CorporateInfluence #SportsSponsorship #AthleteVoices #GlobalEvents #OlympicGames #SponsorshipIssues #EventManagement #ArtAndCulture #SocialMediaControversy #TransparencyInSports #OlympicCeremony

Few months back, I was honored to share the stage with Mr Li Kang from iRunner (China), Mr Excel from Mega Tech (Philippines), and Mr Pramod from Timing Technologies India for a panel discussion about bringing the world's best timing equipment to developing markets. Mr Li, Mr Excel, and Mr Pramod are industry pioneers and leaders in each of their market. It was really interesting to learn from their experiences on how to thrive in difficult markets. China is overwhelmed with local brand competitions; Philippines is geographically challenged as the country is made up of more than 7600 islands, making transportation of equipment extremely difficult; and India is an extremely price sensitive market with a vast population to serve. It was a fruitful discussion as we came to a few conclusions: 1. We need to find the right customers for our products and services. As a company which offers the most accurate, durable, and reliable timing technologies, we should spare our focus on the right audience who values our products as they deserve. 2. We need to continue to add value to our products and services. On top of timing services, sports event organizers are looking to offer a wholesome experience to their athletes. The experience starts even before they register for a race, until they receive a finisher medal, and it continues with post-race engagements. In order to achieve this, collaboration in vertical markets is crucial. Despite multitude of challenges presented in developing markets, sports industry in Asia is growing rapidly and its potential is undeniable. As a leader in the sports timing industry, we continue to work with passionate people and companies from across the region. I cannot wait to see the positive changes in the market, and I am excited to be part of it!
