From 15th to 19th July 2024, I had the privilege to attend a five days Leadership, Governance and customer care for short course for Healthcare professionals offered by Mzumbe university. The course has updated me on various issues regarding Leadership skills such as effective communication, negotiations, conflict resolutions and decision making which help to build Stronger Teams and provide better care. In the course of training, I learnt that Leadership is about Inspiring,motivating and empowering others In addition, a leader should have Strategic Leadership skills which require to anticipate, challenge the status quo, Interprete issues,make decisions,align different opinions and Long life learning. I have learned that Strategic leadership is not reserved for top executives but every employee in an organization has the potential to influence and contribute to the organization success. Furthermore the course has updated me on Good Governance issues such as Transparency, Accountability and Risk management. Governance provides frame work with clear policies and structures while Leadership provides the driving force for implementing strategies and staff motivation Therefore, When these two elements i.e Leadership and Governance are aligned they create synergistic effect, promoting efficiency in operations, quality services and positive work environment.

If you have a young manager with a team that's underperforming it typically isn't the manager that's the problem, it's the person who put the manager in that position. Young managers don't know what to do. Many strong leaders had to figure it out for themselves so they assume everyone can do that, but most can't. Firing the manager very rarely solves the problem. Showing the manager very specifically how to manage effectively is typically the best solution. Is it time consuming? Yes. Is it frustrating at times? Yes. Is it worthwhile? Yes. If you hired the manager it is your responsibility to make sure they succeed so do whatever you need to do there. 

Are there any leaders out there? For anyone interested, this course was truly eye opening and I would highly recommend it for any supervisors, managers, coaches, mentors, or aspiring leaders. It discusses the responsibility of leaders and provides detailed guidance for effective management techniques. The course is provided by the America Institute of CPAs. Definitely check it out!

The eighth trait of great leadership! The author of an article written by Douglas R. Conant in September 2017, entitled “What Do Great Leaders Have in Common?” summed up the common traits of leaders as follows: 1. They know how to inspire trust.  And they prioritize building trust first. 2. They articulate a higher purpose – both for themselves and for the organization. 3. They create a clear and compelling direction for people to follow. With great intention, they plan to perform. 4. They know how to align the organization, or their team, to get the results they want. 5. They cultivate -- and nurture -- a palpable sense of vitality in their organization. They are obsessed with keeping people engaged in the work. 6. They consistently execute; they know that the name of the game is translating trust, purpose, direction, and vitality into solid execution. 7. They are able to produce extraordinary results, meeting and often exceeding expectations.
