How We Made Noise with Make News When we set out to launch "Make News, Make Noise" Season 1 Showcase, our goal was simple: be unapologetically indie, painfully authentic, and speak directly to an audience we know—our people. The creators who aren’t afraid to fail fast, start over, and make the kind of art they *want* to make. We had to get real about our resources, so we bootstrapped this campaign video and leaned all the way into what we do best—telling honest stories with impact. It’s here that Zanah Thirus came in and gave our direction sharp focus. She dropped one line that became the seed for the entire campaign's manifesto: "Real indies deserve the big screen." That line was the game-changer. It wasn’t about trying to be more than what we are, but about leaning into our indie identity with purpose. Our strategy was never to over-promise production value we didn’t have, but to speak to the heartbeat of our community. We’re tired of the artificial, copy-paste narratives, and so is our audience. We’re speaking to the storytellers who define culture, not the ones who mimic it. Out of that came "Paper Route", our campaign manifesto led by Jordan our Creative Director (who is truly the coolest older Gen Z lol). It's a rallying cry for creators like us—hungry, creative, and driven by purpose. In every city, on every block, there’s a story waiting to be told. And we’re ready to fill the streets with stories that matter. Real indies deserve more than just the big screen—they deserve the respect of the industry. Sign me up! 🙋 The decision to attend yesterday's With US: Media Art & Film Conference presented by Digi60 Filmmakers' Festival & Digital Arts Resource Centre was a no-brainer. I was especially looking forward to hearing Gabriela Warrior Renaud's (pictured standing near the exit sign) lecture about the Ethics of Documentary Filmmaking. We talked about the duty of care towards participants and our responsibilities as filmmakers during each stage of production. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: -Documentary participants are more than that. They're your team members; without them, there would be no story; -You can sacrifice video components to make interviews more comfortable; -Approach editing and assembly the way you'd want your own story to be told; -Be mindful of the spaces in which you show the work. A really interesting article by INDEX ON CENSORSHIP on the increasing use of threats of violence to intimidate festivals. This follows the recent decision by the London Film Festival to pull Undercover: Exposing The Far Right and The Toronto International Film Festival pausing screenings of the controversial documentary Russians at War, after staff received threats of violence and sexual violence. Sadly such tactics are by no means new and are often part of the playbook of authoritarian regimes and extremist groups. However, there is a worrying trend that they are now being used by elements of special interest and lobby groups to dictate what is or not acceptable for the public to view. Undoubtedly each incident has a chilling effect on filmmakers, funders and festivals trying to get important stories on social justice, human rights and politics, to the public. 3wYES I named my company Sunshine Silver Lining after Silver Linings Playbook, though first a novel, as it was the first time I saw mental illness on the screen in a way that felt familiar and also accessible, and recovery-oriented! It changed my life! And of course, Annie has guided my way - first a comic, then musical and the movie got to me first! When I got to work with Bill Berloni my dreams really were coming true!
