Valuable discussion with lawmakers, government officials, and experts at POLITICO's Transforming Health Care event this week on policy solutions to expand access to innovative therapies and digital health technologies. 🏥 Digital health and medical diagnostics were in the spotlight as innovations that could meet urgent needs for a healthcare system facing staffing shortages, a burnout epidemic, growing access gaps, and rising costs as demand grows. 🏥 "The user interface should be a priority for development of digital health tools. Ease of access and ease of use are all factors in promoting adoption and addressing health disparities with these innovations." 🏥 AI in healthcare was a hot topic as panels weighed regulations to ensure patient safety and privacy while supporting health system ability to adopt the technology to alleviate administrative burden and improve outcomes 🏥 Several sessions focused discussion on reimbursement reform, the need to rework Medicare Advantage (MA) quality ratings, and how payment systems can be improved to keep up with innovations. 🏥 "I try to be more prudent" in using diagnostic imaging to treat patients, because it's not covered like other medical options. "We're well aware patients must pay out of pocket...new tech is "not cheap..." 🏥 Panelists, including U.S. Rep. Ami Bera, MD considered how government incentives could support medtech innovation and advancement of digital health to expand access and advance health equity. Good insights from Paul Blanchfield, Lantheus, Susan Coller Monarez, Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), Dartmouth Health, and Alexander Ding, MD, MBA. #POLITICOHealth #digitalhealth #diagnostics #healthtech #medtech #healthcarepolicy #healthcareregulation #healthcareinnovation

Check out Violet's newest blog summarizing our Violet Benchmarks as a Quality Measure white paper findings! 📣 (Link in the comments) From the article: "Our research is the first to show that cultural competence positively impacts care outcomes throughout the full patient journey, from match to clinical outcomes. When patients see a clinician who has extensive education, work experience, and a desire to treat their community, patients will not only have a better experience, they will get better care. We found that these patients have an easier time matching with a provider, attend more appointments, and get better faster. With the current push for tangible health equity interventions, training clinicians in inclusive care practices and routing patients to clinicians who excel treating their communities will become crucial in working to end health disparities. Clinicians need a baseline measure to understand where they can continue to upskill, while patients need to be able to find providers who specialize in caring for their identities. This study provides initial validation that Violet Benchmarks are able to serve as that measure and capture clinician quality, and further point to the necessity of provider inclusivity data in our health care system." #HealthEquity #HealthTech #CulturalCompetence

Mark your calendars for a virtual event you won't want to miss! Next week, Cambridge Forum will take a deep dive into our healthcare system to explore how it's changing. As we all know, falling off mainstream medical coverage can be a scary place to land. The good guidance, support, and infrastructure we need to navigate the system isn't always readily available. That's why Susannah Fox's solution is so interesting. By tracking the expert networks of patients, survivors, and caregivers, she's found a way forward. Fox believes that the next wave of health innovation will come from the front lines of a "patient-led revolution in medical care." But, the shortage of doctors and professional caregivers available to patients is a serious issue that many feel cannot be replaced by technology alone. In fact, patients often complain about the lack of personal interaction and compassion. Dr. Allen Sussman, author of SAVING THE ART OF MEDICINE, shares this sentiment. He's a retired endocrinologist and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Washington. Join us to hear more about these topics and more at the Cambridge Forum. Robbie Allen sums is up nicely: “It is fascinating when straightforward facts disrupt headline narratives.” A few of the takeaways from this research from the most comprehensive source of data on private markets: 1. PE backed providers represent <4% of the US provider ecosystem. 2. PE investment in healthcare providers is neither new nor surging. 3. The growth in physician employment is not primarily driven by pe-backed providers. 70% of all employed providers are employed by hospitals. (Second is insurance companies with the single largest employer of physicians being United Healthcare at 90k, having added 20k in 2023 alone).

It is fascinating when straight forward facts disrupt headline narratives. This is one of the most factual and least biased articles and analysis on who is owning and employing providers in healthcare in America today. It is worth a read if you have a minute, and it is the first of a series of academic and journalistic reporting papers coming out over the next 12 months that start with factual analytics to really look at what is going on in healthcare from the consolidation perspective. Punchline shortcut - the villains might not be who you think they are, and the scale of different player's involvement is likely surprising to most. As an advocate for the clinicians delivering the actual care every day (and until recently, almost always the ones with the least power and quietest voice), this is the kind of transparent discussion we need to start having. Thank you Rebecca Springer, PhD for the well researched article! #healthcare

Navigating the Doctor-Patient Relationship in the Digital Age In today’s digital landscape, patients increasingly turn to online resources for health information. However, some healthcare professionals dismiss these informed patients as "medically illiterate," a term that can be both pejorative and dismissive. Research from peer-reviewed studies, including Cochrane reviews, empowers intelligent, college-educated patients from all socioeconomic backgrounds to actively participate in their healthcare. It’s crucial for medical professionals to recognize and value this engagement rather than shutting it down. As citizen scientists contribute to our understanding of health issues, it’s vital that we foster an open dialogue between doctors and informed patients. This collaborative approach can lead to better health outcomes and greater patient satisfaction. Rather than viewing patients' research as a challenge, let’s embrace it as an opportunity to enhance communication and trust. By promoting health literacy and respecting the knowledge that patients bring to the table, we can transform the doctor-patient relationship into a partnership that benefits everyone. Let’s work together to create a healthcare environment that values informed dialogue, respect, and collaboration! #Healthcare #PatientEngagement #HealthLiteracy #MedicalProfessionals #CitizenScience #Collaboration #DigitalHealth

Confirmation Bias: A Silent Threat to Patient Care Confirmation bias—the tendency to seek information that confirms our existing beliefs—is a pervasive cognitive trap that can have serious consequences in healthcare. When clinicians fall prey to this bias, diagnostic errors, delayed treatments, and suboptimal patient outcomes can result. Imagine a scenario where a doctor suspects a patient has a specific condition. They might focus solely on symptoms that align with this diagnosis, overlooking other potential explanations. This is confirmation bias in action. While acknowledging that this bias is a natural human tendency, it's crucial to recognize its potential harm. By implementing strategies to counteract confirmation bias, healthcare providers can significantly improve patient care. Key strategies to mitigate confirmation bias include: Cultivating a culture of inquiry: Encourage open dialogue, challenge assumptions, and value diverse perspectives within clinical teams. Prioritizing evidence-based practice: Stay updated on the latest research and guidelines to inform clinical decision-making. Leveraging technology: Utilize decision support tools and algorithms to reduce cognitive biases. Encouraging second opinions: Seek input from colleagues to gain fresh perspectives on complex cases. Promoting patient involvement: Involve patients in decision-making to ensure all perspectives are considered. By actively addressing confirmation bias, healthcare professionals can enhance their diagnostic accuracy, improve patient outcomes, and build stronger doctor-patient relationships. What strategies have you found effective in overcoming confirmation bias in your clinical practice? Share your experiences in the comments below. #confirmationbias #clinicalpractice #healthcare #medicalerrors #patientcare #decisionmaking #bias #medicine #healthcareproviders Possible engagement questions: Have you ever witnessed confirmation bias in a healthcare setting? How did it impact the patient? What steps can healthcare organizations take to create a culture that values evidence-based practice and minimizes confirmation bias? How can we empower patients to be active participants in their own care and help reduce the impact of confirmation bias?

"Medicine is the science by which we learn the various states of the body; in health, when not in health; the means by which health is likely to be lost; and, when lost, is likely to be restored. In other words, it is the art whereby health is concerned and the art by which it is restored after being lost." The Canon of Medicine (1025 AC), Abu Ali Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sina (Avicaena) The book that was used as the standard medical textbook in Europe until the 18th century, over 700 years! And there was no mention that a doctor should spend more time typing symbols into silicon machines than with a patient. No mention of the fact that up to 35% of a doctor's time should be spent pressing buttons on a keyboard, dragging down the quality of service, the productivity of healthcare institutions and the burnout of practitioners. The good news: AI-Powered Clinical Assistant returns interactions Between Practitioners and Patients. Doctors are back to the art of healing from routine of typing. Generally available in the US for ambulatory clinics, the solution combines voice with generative AI to help eliminate EHR clicks, reduce provider burnout, and improve quality of care. “Oracle Clinical Digital Assistant is the most important EHR technology update that I am going to see in my career. Since the 1990’s, EHR’s have turned physicians into keyboard junkies. This will change that,” said James Little, MD, primary care physician, St. John’s Health. “Our physicians who have been using this technology have been able to document their patients’ visit in real-time, allowing them to leave at the end of the day with good, quality notes. Time spent after hours documenting is no longer needed.” https://lnkd.in/dzkwVMap Details: https://lnkd.in/dd5y56JV https://lnkd.in/dyPUrysb

I have been waiting for independent, evidence-based assessments of the adoption of digital healthcare technology. Honored to work with Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) on this report. Sobering findings. Digital #diabetes management tools do not routinely deliver meaningful health benefits that justify their cost. Good resource for payers, providers, and innovators to understand what the limitations of existing (#RPM #behavioralhealth #lifestylemodification #ketosis) systems are and how we can improve. We will address additional clinical areas sequentially, so more to come.
