Last week, we launched new bilingual work under our End Family Fire campaign in partnership with Brady: United Against Gun Violence. This is the first-ever national public education campaign on safe gun storage reaching Hispanic gun owners. Currently, about 14 million Hispanic individuals (over a quarter of the population) in America own a gun and Hispanic individuals account for nearly 1 in 5 of the gun owners who acquired their first gun between 2019-21. The motivations for gun acquisition and ownership are complex. One in five Hispanic adults report a constant fear of gun violence and, like many other gun-owning populations, bring a gun into their home for protection and a sense of safety. A securely stored gun can make all the difference. A cornerstone of this work is the new Spanish-language website: DaElSiguientePaso.org. The site includes important information and videos about secure gun storage, addressing the critical need for educational materials in Spanish. The multimedia campaign includes new video, radio, digital banners, social media, and print assets. This.... This is why there SHOULD be some level of gun CONTROL. In my mind, the RIGHT to own a firearm should be directly linked to the CAPACITY to do so RESPONSIBLY. ANYONE has the right to buy beer, as long as they're old enough. But - no matter their age - they cannot DRIVE AFTER consuming ANY amount of it. The reason: The greater interest in public safety. ANYONE has the right to drive a car, as long as they drive in the right direction, stop at intersections, yield to red lights, etc. But - no matter their age - they cannot DRIVE ANYWHERE, IN ANY DIRECTION, AT ANY SPEED. The reason: The greater interest in public safety. ANYONE has the right to make a fire. But - no matter their reason - they cannot MAKE A FIRE ANYWHERE THEY WANT, AT ANY TIME. The reason: The greater interest in public safety. The same (obvious) logic should apply to guns, in my mind.

Increasingly we see the straw man fallacy used to counter facts. Be aware of this tactic being used against post on the Internet. The straw man fallacy is a common logical error where an individual misrepresents an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack. Instead of engaging with the actual position, the person creates a distorted version, often exaggerating or fabricating details. This tactic not only undermines constructive debate but also misleads audiences about the original argument. For instance, if someone advocates for stricter gun control, a straw man response might be, "Why do you want to take away everyone's guns?" This misrepresentation shifts the focus from the nuanced discussion of regulation to an extreme and unfounded claim, making it easier to refute.Recognizing straw man arguments is crucial for effective communication and critical thinking. By addressing the actual points made, rather than a distorted version, discussions can remain productive and grounded in reality, fostering a more informed and respectful exchange of ideas.
