Keep your loved ones safe this Thanksgiving. Practice safe and secure gun storage. Keeping guns stored, unloaded, and locked prevents unauthorized users, like children, from getting access to and then getting injured by firearms in their homes. https://lnkd.in/eW6dX63N

Promoting safe storage of guns saves lives. We appreciate this reminder from Texas Gun Sense about how to promote safe storage. Check out the link below to read about five steps you can take to advocate for safe gun storage. Texas Gun Sense Nicole Golden, MSSW
Last year, there were 156 unintentional shootings which resulted in 49 deaths and 113 injuries. In many of these instances, children with easy access to firearms pulled the trigger. In 2023, Texas not only led the nation in unintentional shootings but also in gun sales. Lax gun laws combined with high rates of gun ownership inevitably lead to more gun tragedies. You can play a vital role in reducing the number of unintentional shootings and saving lives by reading, sharing, and implementing the proposed strategies in our Safe Storage Toolkit. https://lnkd.in/gqbe6zNg #TexasGunSense #HonorWithAction #DoSomethingTX

Excited to announce that our collaboration with the Center for American Progress was just published. Our article explores and debunks the common myth that guns make us safer. This work builds off of GVPedia's report on the Defensive Gun Use Lie that we released last year: https://lnkd.in/g22WeWJm Accurate information is critically important in fighting America’s epidemic of gun violence. Just as important, however, is countering inaccurate information. Until the defensive gun use myth is defeated, Americans will continue buying firearms in the mistaken belief that those guns will make them safer, and gun violence will continue unabated. https://lnkd.in/gkrEDTGf

An important report pushing back on the deadly myth that guns make us safer. A myth that the gun industry has made into an equally deadly marketing tool. Just one of the critical points raised - the racism baked in to stand your ground (SYG) laws: “Emboldened by a ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ culture, too many armed individuals have used deadly force as a first response, rather than a last resort. More concerning, gun homicides in which white shooters invoked SYG after killing Black victims were determined justifiable by the legal system five times more often than when the situation was reversed, indicating serious racial disparities in the defensive use of firearms.” We have so much work to do.

No, Shaquille O'Neal, gun buybacks don't keep anybody safe. It's a way for criminals to get rid of evidence and get some cash. It's a way for people with poor quality/low quality guns to get more for them than they're worth, etc. The people that are going to use guns in crimes are going to hang on to them. People that are not inclined to use them in crimes are just disarming themselves. This accomplishes nothing. Also, in most cases, only the receiver gets destroyed and the rest of the parts end up back on the open market because the cities doing these drives aren't paying to destroy the entire firearm. See, the companies that do this tell these cities, "Hey, we'll destroy the receivers for free but we get to keep the non serialized parts. Or, you can pay us to destroy all of it. So no, Shaq, you're not helping anybody. You're not keeping communities safe. If you want to keep communities safe, set up programs to instruct good people in low income neighborhoods how to properly use and store firearms so they can defend themselves, their families and their homes.

🔫In March, gun sales hit 1,442,061, continuing a 56-month streak of over one million firearms sold each month. The increase is linked to fears of AR-15-style firearm bans, President Joe Biden’s discussion of firearm regulations, and growing concerns over safety and crime. With election season on the horizon and the intensifying national conversation on gun control, industry experts anticipate strong sales to persist. 🇺🇸 For more of the latest 2A news, head over to www.Trident1POS.com/Blog #ThePatriot #Trident1 #FFLPOS #Trident1POS #FFLSoftware

🔍 Fact-Checking Claims on Gun Violence 🔍 At an event discussing efforts to curb gun violence, claims were made about the sources of guns used in school shootings. However, experts say the statistic cited is mostly false. 🔍 What the Data Says: Studies show that around half of school shootings involve firearms obtained from unsecured or accessible locations in family homes. A 2019 U.S. Secret Service report found that 76% of shooters acquired guns from homes, with 48% coming from locations considered accessible or not secured. 📊 Experts Weigh In: Criminologists and youth gun violence experts caution that data on gun storage and its relation to school shootings is limited. While it's logical to assume that most guns used in school shootings come from the shooter's home, the exact percentage is unclear. 🔒 Defining Secure Storage: The standard for secure storage is ensuring unauthorized individuals cannot access firearms. This typically means storing guns in locked safes or cabinets, unloaded and separated from ammunition. 💡 Key Takeaways: While there's evidence linking unsecured guns at home to school shootings, the statistics provided may be exaggerated. It's crucial to promote responsible gun ownership and secure storage practices to prevent tragedies. https://lnkd.in/dNdjVMwZ #GunViolence #SchoolShootings #GunSafety #FactCheck #TexasPolitics

It’s Gun Storage Check Week—a reminder to help prevent unwanted access to your firearms. A study investigating firearm suicide and gun ownership found that for youth ages 18 and under, 79% used a firearm belonging to a family member, and 19% used their own firearm. No one wants their unsecured gun to be used in an accident, a suicide, or a crime. Let’s make our homes safer. #GunStorageCheckWeek #SuicidePreventionMonth

Safe storage is incredibly important for the safety of all in the home! As a paramedic, I want to emphasize the need to prevent these incidents as gunshot wounds, especially in children, are so lethal. I encourageeveryone but especially my first responder family to take a moment and confirm you are practicing best practices for safe storage. These incidents are preventable. Just as pool safety is critical to protect children from drowning so is safe storage of all guns. Teach your family about gun safety (even if you don’t own any) and always practice safe storage (and confirm others do where you visit) to prevent a tragedy for your family.
Every day 8 children are shot and injured or killed by an unsecured gun in the home. “Educating people about how guns should be properly stored—regardless of if the gun owner followed all the rules—is really important,” said Center co-director Cassandra Crifasi in The Washington Post. https://lnkd.in/e4aSfvPC
More children are finding guns and shooting themselves. But why?
