For Year 2025, it's important to review the major functions of your company's SAFETY & HEALTH COMMITTEE (SHC) to ensure that the committee is effective in its role to mitigate workplace injuries and illnesses. There are 5 major functions: ✅️[1] Hazards Identification. A SHC review can help identify potential hazards in the workplace, such as actual conditions and latent conditions that could cause harm. Note: There are 8 common hazards. ✅️[2] Review effectiveness of correction actions. It's important to review the effectiveness of safety & health counter measures, especially when a control measure isn't working. A safety review can help identify potential hazards in the workplace, such as latent conditions that could cause harm. ✅️[3] Investigate complaints and conduct investigation confidently. A SHC team should investigate complaints about safety and health hazards. Also, be able to perform incident investigation confidently. ✅️[4] Promote an empowered Safety Culture. A SHC's role is to foster a safety culture among the workforce. 🌟 Enhancing Workplace Safety: Key Takeaways from an Occupational Health and Safety Class 🌟 On October 1st, 2024, I had the opportunity to attend a short class on occupational health and safety procedures, and it was an invaluable experience! Understanding Occupational Safety: The class emphasized the importance of creating a safe work environment, recognizing hazards, and implementing preventive measures to protect ourselves and our colleagues in our workplace. One of the highlights of the training was the practical session on how to use a fire extinguisher for small-scale fires. Here are some of the essential insights I gained: Fire Extinguisher Training: We learned the PASS technique—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep—to effectively use a fire extinguisher. This hands-on practice boosted my confidence in handling small fires should they occur. Promoting a Culture of Safety: It's essential to foster a safety-first mindset in the workplace, encouraging everyone to contribute to a safer environment.
