Africa has had series of amazing WASH Initiatives across the continent. Some successful #WASH initiatives in Africa include the WA-WASH program that provided improved drinking water sources and sanitation facilities to thousands of people in #Burkina Faso, #Ghana, and #Niger. Additionally, private-public #partnerships in South Africa, like the collaboration between #WaterAid and South African Breweries, have significantly improved access to basic #sanitation and #water supply. The Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) aims to deliver #sustainable water and #sanitation services to #urban areas, benefiting around 270,000 people. Lastly, the #Sustainable Water and #Sanitation in Africa Project supported urban WASH in #Liberia, enhancing #water service #delivery and financial #sustainability.

CLEAN-Air(Africa) is excited to witness a significant step towards promoting #cleancooking in Tanzania. Last week, the President of #Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu, demonstrated #cleancooking practices using #LPG, to replace traditional use of polluting #wood and #charcoal, fuels that are predominantly used in the country. This live cooking demonstration was part of the "Declaration of Kizimkazi," which is not only showcasing the benefits of clean cooking but also sparking a national debate on the importance of adopting cleaner energy solutions for #health, #genderequality, the environment and climate. By highlighting the advantages of using LPG for cooking, the President is setting a powerful example to help promote population scale of adoption of truly clean cooking in Tanzania aligned with the #SDG7 goal of Universal Access to Clean Modern Energy by 2030. With colleagues from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), we are pleased to be contributing to clean cooking policy in Tanzania with important research on how to encourage communities to fully transition from polluting solid fuels to clean cooking with LPG. Payment for #Ecosystem Services (PES) is one approach that Solidaridad East and Central Africa uses to motivate farmers to practice #agroforestry and significantly contribute to #GHG #emissions reduction. In the #carbon trade pathway of our Nationale Postcode Loterij funded 'Climate Heroes' project, verified carbon removal units (CRUs) are traded through Acorn under the Plan Vivo Foundation certification standards. The amount of carbon sequestered in the agroforestry system is determined through remote sensing, which is a very transparent process. The CRUs traded through Acorn are traceable, uniquely registered and accounted for. In order to prevent double counting, issuance, use or claim of project emissions reductions, all our CRUs are registered with unique serial numbers, highlighting when (year), where (Country, GPS coordinates) and by whom (Organization/ local partner) from which the CRUs were generated. Last week Solidaridad East and Central Africa hosted Cate O'Kane, the vice president and Enoch Makobi the Uganda Country director of Trees for the Future in its Uganda Country office to discuss synergies and collaboration with the main aim of avoiding double counting in the Mt. Elgon region as we all promote agroforestry in the same region and Trees for the Future is having prospects of carbon trade in the near future. #DidYouKnow? 500,000+ estimated acres of forests are cut annually throughout Uganda. This is an equivalent of deforesting 43 football fields every hour. At this rate, it is estimated that by 2050, there will be no forests outside of protected areas remaining in Uganda. It is such alarming figures that prompted Uganda Breweries to start the Running Out of Trees (ROOTs) campaign as a public-private sector tree planting initiative to plant more trees. We have partnered with the Ministry of Water and Environment, Tree Adoption Uganda, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), MTN Uganda, TotalEnergies, Stanbic Bank Uganda, Roofings Group, National Water & Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), and MOGAS among others to push it forward. The ROOTs Campaign was launched in February 2020 as a 5-year project geared towards soliciting commitments from the private sector to support Government’s initiative to restore forest cover. The campaign has so far ensured the planting of over 20 million trees. We believe that there is so much to gain from a smiling environment.
