🎄 Did you know that artificial Christmas trees can take hundreds of years to break down in landfills? And that studies show a fake tree has nearly three times the climate impact of a real one? With the holiday season in full swing, many of us are asking: What’s the most sustainable option for a Christmas tree? 🌍 We dug into the research with our sustainability expert Katre Kahre, and here’s what we discovered: • ✨ A real tree is often the better choice for the environment. While artificial trees may seem sustainable because they’re reusable, studies show they need to be used for at least 20 years to offset their environmental impact. In reality, most are used for just six years before they’re discarded. • ✨ Real trees, especially those sourced from RMK (Estonian State Forest Management), are often removed from areas where they’re already causing issues (like under power lines). This approach minimizes harm to the environment while also supporting sustainable forest management. 🌲 • ✨ At events, RMK rents small trees from their plantations to decorate stages, info desks, and other areas. It’s a practical and eco-friendly way to create a festive atmosphere. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻? For over six years, we’ve reused the same cardboard Christmas tree in our office, designed by our talented in-house designer Kristi Tamming. A timeless design and a sustainable choice we’re proud of! 💛 📣 Katre’s ultimate tip → Instead of buying a tree, decorate the natural ones growing in your garden. It’s creative, waste-free, and kind to the planet. How are you making your holidays more sustainable this year? Share your ideas below → we’d love to hear them! 🌟 #sustainability #realvsfake #jolos

The 2024 Wood Furniture Scorecard is published! 🌳🪑 Initiated by the Sustainable Furnishings Council and the National Wildlife Federation in 2018, this scorecard champions responsible wood sourcing in the furniture industry. Forests, essential for biodiversity and clean air, are at risk with deforestation being a major contributor to climate change. The goal of the scorecard is to encourage furniture retailers, large and small, to implement robust policies that drive responsible wood sourcing practices through their complex supply chains. Forests are crucial, and we must protect the trees and the forest biodiversity. They provide vital habitats for thousands of species, livelihood for people, and cleaner air for all life on the planet we share. Deforestation is a major contributing cause of climate change. Furniture manufacturers are major consumers of wood and have an enormous responsibility to harvest and use wood sustainably. Consumers wield tremendous influence over retailers, so check out the 2024 Scorecard and the companies receiving High and Top Scores! 🎄 How can we make our cities more sustainable this Christmas? ✨ As the holiday season lights up our cities, let’s ask ourselves: How can we make our celebrations and our urban spaces more sustainable? This Christmas, let’s create a lasting impact—starting with the design of the spaces we love. 🌲 Supporting urban Christmas tree farms that grow trees in city environments helps reduce transportation emissions, boosts the local economy, and promotes urban biodiversity. 🔋 Use energy-efficient LED lights and recycled materials for decorations. Encourage local businesses to reduce waste by offering eco-friendly products and supporting sustainable markets that highlight locally sourced, handmade items. 🌱 Winterizing parks and creating temporary green installations or winter gardens in public areas helps reduce the environmental footprint and improves air quality, even in colder months. 🏙️ Sustainable architecture, such as well-insulated public buildings and solar-powered streetlights, can reduce energy usage during the colder months and improve the overall urban environment. 💚 Support community-driven sustainability projects! Whether it’s a tree-planting initiative, a holiday composting program, or promoting recycling efforts, locals can come together to make a real impact. #christmas #Xmas #sustainability #city #cities

"A forest shares a history which each tree remembers even after it has been felled." - Anna Michaels We returned to the woods after a long time. Can't express enough gratitude to Mother Nature for blessing us with wealth of lush green gold. 🤗 Was happy to be back amidst such beauty but sad at the same time seeing so many trees that are missing, that once stood here proudly and now just sitting pretty as decor of myriads of homestays that are being built at lightning speed. Let us start accepting and appreciating nature in its rawest form, rather than cutting, twisting, moulding it into things that are never built to last. We appreciate wooden decor/interiors is the reason why locals don't hesitate in chopping the forest down. If we can all go to the mountains and enjoy it in its purest form, rather than opting for 5 star hotels with amenities that might be offering few moments of pleasure but come at the cost of depletion of natural resources that are almost impossible to replace. If you are coming to the mountains, keep it simple. For complicated luxurious experience, stay in cities. For the best experience: 1) Stay with local family (source of income for them). 2) Eat food they eat (not Dominozz).Learn about their culture while you enjoy your meal with them. 3) Be simple & humble. Don't be too demanding. It's their home, not hotel. 4) Explore town on foot (less movement of cars, less carbon emission), 5) Carry reusable cutlery, so you don't have to accept those single use plastic fork & spoon from vendors. 6) Generate as little waste as you can. Best return gift you can give to the mountains is by bringing your plastic waste back with you. Disposing it off here in the plains is better than leaving them in the mountains 7) Don't litter. EVER. 8) Don't opt for huge 5 star properties. There once stood a mountain, where you're booking your fancy hotel room. 9) Carry your reusable water bottle & reusable shopping bags. 10) Don't forget to take a walk into the woods 🤗 Basically, you can't treat mountains/Forests, how you treat your cities. They are to be cherished, protected & loved. So handle them with utmost love & care #allgoodthings #agt #allgoodthingssquad #sustainablehospitality #sustainablehotel #sustainabletourism #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #sustainablechoices
