In 1987, a man bought a lifetime first-class ticket on American Airlines for $250,000. His name was Steven Rothstein, and he used the ticket a lot. He would fly anywhere he wanted, like going to Paris for breakfast, London for lunch, and New York for dinner. He took over 10,000 flights, which cost the airline about $21 million. In 2008, they stopped his ticket. Back in 1981, American Airlines was having money problems and couldn't borrow from banks because interest rates were too high. A new executive had the idea to sell lifetime first-class tickets, calling it "AAirpass," for $250,000 each. This would give the airline money quickly. One ticket even allowed you to bring a friend for an extra $150,000, making it $400,000 in total. If you adjust for inflation, that would be about $1.2 million today. The airline thought people would use the tickets normally, but they didn't expect some buyers to use them a lot. For these "super-travelers," it was a great deal. Source: Unknown Facts

American Airlines Reverts Decision on Loyalty Points for Third-Party Bookings The airline has announced that travelers will continue to earn AAdvantage Miles regardless of where they book their tickets. This reversal comes after plans to limit mileage accrual to direct bookings were met with potential customer disruption. The airline is apparently prioritizing customer experience and feedback while still aiming to enhance direct booking incentives through New Distribution Capability (NDC). There is only one way you can actually get the lowest price for your airline tickets. And that's to be IN THE GAME. Not on the sidelines, and not booking basic economy. In other words, rather than endlessly searching for the lowest price BEFORE you book, just book the ticket early (on the airline's website, NOT through a 3rd party). Once the price drops later, you can then save money because airlines will honor the lower price for you. This way, you protect yourself against FOMO when you see the price go up the next day, but you can also reap the benefits when the price drops. Win, WIN!

I never recommend airline credit cards. Except this one. As a rule, flexible points (bank points) are the best. Why? They can be deployed to tons of airline & hotel programs. Why get a Delta card when Amex transfers 1:1 to Delta? Flex points make sense 95% of the time. But here's my big exception. 🛫 American Airlines' AAdvantage program. No bank lets you transfer points to American. And American's program is DANG good. → 16k roundtrip anywhere in America. → 70k business class to the Middle East (one-way). → 20k roundtrip to the Carribean. The best way to earn AAdvantage miles is with one of their credit cards. This is typically the only airline card I recommend to clients. And this isn't only for people in American hubs. It's often the same price (in points) to fly from Miami (hub) to the Caribbean as it is to fly from a small regional airport like Fort Wayne, IN. Travelers trying to get into an airport lounge today are often greeted with a buffet of restrictions. More crackdowns are coming in 2025 as airlines and credit-card companies continue their never-ending quest to control crowds. For travelers, the time is now to evaluate whether that costly credit card promising lounge access is worth it. Here’s what you need to know: ▪️ Capital One just eliminated free access to its swank new lounges for cardholders with two lower-tier cards, and last year raised the entry fee for noncardholders from $65 to $90 a visit ▪️ On Feb. 1, Delta Air Lines will implement a whopper of a new policy. Travelers whose golden ticket into 52 Delta Sky Clubs around the country is a premium American Express card will now be limited to 10 or 15 annual visits, depending on the card.
