The best team to watch won. The bravest manager won. England only ever stepped out of their own shadow when a goal down. A well deserved win for Spain. They won all 7 of their games! Spicy tapas vs stodgy porridge. Thought: what would we say if England had won? Safety first, nobody remembers second place? Winning is everything? Doesn’t matter how? Doesn’t that remind you of modern hyper-corporate society? Think popular messaging. Think education system. Think corporate culture. Think social status. Is it a good thing? It’s a dangerous game to play. Fail and you’re consigned to the dustbin of history. You MUST win. Is Southgate the most successful England manager of the modern era? Yes. But what do you remember about his reign? Winning, at all costs, is not a value I can align with. I’d rather be a proud, courageous second place than a parsimonious winner. In work, life, football.
