Field work is the foundation of engineering work. Without it, nothing in the built environment could have been built at all. I had the opportunity for a field visit last week to a plant for walking down a few different projects. The data gathered, pictures taken, and conversations had will all be the building blocks of these projects for months to come. Sometimes the field work can be done by a surveying or scanning team, especially for new construction projects. Other times the field work has to be done by the engineers and designers performing the work to ensure very specific pieces of operational data are recorded. But beyond the data gathering, the conversations held are irreplaceable. Getting face to face with your team and your client while on site leads to all manner of questions that would not come up in a Teams call or an e-mail. The project is made more real for everyone and, I believe, much improved when you are face to face hashing out problems. #engineering #facetoface #datagathering

8moAbsolutely. Do visit the site. Do not rely solely on surveys and ancient drawings. Do include a cross-functional team for an initial site walk to anticipate as many potential issues as possible in the design phase. Selfish plug: DO include a quality professional familiar with your project requirements. Good post, Jonathan! 👏
