Without clear answers to the questions of “where to play” and “how to play” you don't have a strategy. At the heart of a strategy is an approach for achieving your chosen objectives and overcoming the challenges associated with it. The latter are typically the result of the constraints imposed by your starting position. Your course of action is determined by the two fundamental choices of strategy. “Where to play” refers to the playing field on which you choose to compete. “How to play” concerns the way you intend to succeed in that domain. The “where to play” and “how to play” choices mutually depend on each other and can’t be made in isolation. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the world‘s most prestigious car races. Audi's motorsport team made its "where to play“ decision in the late 1980s when it entered the tournament. In 2006, the team reconsidered its "how to play“ choice to continue its track record. The traditional way of competing in the racing industry was building faster cars. Instead Audi's engineers developed the R10 TDI, the company's first diesel fuel-powered racing car. The R10 TDI didn’t go any faster than the competing cars but had superior fuel efficiency and thus required significantly fewer pit stops. Audi won Le Mans for the next three years in a row. #strategy
