Fuel Types and Requirements for Nano-, Micro-, and Molten Salt Reactors: A Deep Dive HALEU is a type of nuclear fuel made from uranium that has been processed to increase the concentration of the fissile isotope uranium-235 (U-235) to between 5% and 20%. For comparison, natural uranium only contains about 0.7% U-235, and the current fuel for most operating nuclear reactors is enriched to around 3-5% U-235. HALEU offers several advantages over traditional low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel: Smaller reactors: HALEU fuel allows for more efficient use of U-235, enabling the design of smaller, more compact reactors. This is particularly beneficial for advanced reactor designs and small modular reactors (SMRs). Longer fuel life: HALEU-fueled reactors can operate for longer periods between refueling, reducing operational costs and waste generation. Increased efficiency: HALEU can improve the overall efficiency of nuclear power plants, leading to cleaner energy production. Current Status: HALEU is still under development, with limited commercial availability. However, several countries, including the United States, are investing in HALEU research and development to support the deployment of advanced nuclear reactors.
NUCLEAR 101: HALEU stands for high-assay low-enriched uranium. It’s a crucial material required by many new reactors to achieve smaller designs, longer operating cycles, and increased efficiencies over current tech. Learn more: https://bit.ly/44yUZCE
