VERY interesting study by Hugo Godschalk / PaySys Consultancy GmbH on current distribution of #card POS (point of sale) #payment #terminals in Germany in millions. Link to public available study below in comments! Very interesting finding for me is: Surprisingly low share of domestic girocard-only terminals vs the unexpected high share of MC/VISA-only terminals. I had expected a higher share in domestic-only terminals and way lower MC/VISA-only share. Intl scheme-only terminals are probably #mpos terminals - also an indication on the huge success of mpos-players in Germany. The data is also an important indicator for German banks / card issuers and their debit card strategies in light of Maestro and Vpay sunset. #payments

Soft declines are common at the point of sale and usually happen because of technical or network issues during processing. Some examples include: Network Unavailable / Device Unresponsive / System Malfunction / High Volume of Requests, etc. Usually these are temporary and can be re-attempted. Sometimes simply restarting or using another POS machine will allow the merchant to retain the transaction. Hard declines, on the other hand, happen when the issuer rejects the transaction, and these are permanent issues. Merchants should avoid retrying these transactions with the same card because it can lead to extra fees and increased costs. Examples of hard declines include: Code 51 'Insufficient Funds' / Code 54 'Expired Card' / Code 05 'Do Not Honor' / Code 65 'Credit Limit Exceeded', etc. Managing declines effectively requires training and knowing which ones can be retried and which can’t. This will help save revenue and avoid missed opportunities. It’s also important for processors and acquirers to return the correct decline codes/reasons in the authorization response messages so merchants know what actions to take. There are many instances in the market where these are mapped to generic codes which can lead to confusion.
