Under the motto "Seed and Succeed 🌱," BIOTECH AUSTRIA invited to its 3rd Biotech Circle Austria at the Wiener Boerse this morning. Norbert Bischofberger delivered an inspiring talk, addressing the disparities between the biotech funding landscape in the US and Europe, followed by a lively panel discussion, with some thought-provoking questions. I believe that we have fantastic scientific achievements 🔬 and success stories in Austria, yet perhaps we sometimes lack the confidence(?) to effectively communicate them to a wider audience. Let’s dare to be a little bit bolder, think bigger, and also embrace failures without fear. We can only truly convince others of Austria being a great place for biotech when we are convinced ourselves! For those navigating the complex world of life sciences and professional networking, every conference is more than just an event—it's a pivotal connection point. Over four remarkable years (2019-2023), I had the incredible opportunity to serve as a Trade Exhibitor and Organization Team Member for the BioAsia-Telangana Life Sciences Global Bio Business Forum and visit the Genome Valley (India’s first organized cluster for Life Sciences R&D). AusBiotech 2024 promotes innovation, collaboration, commercialisation and equalisation.    Reflecting on the themes of last week's events in Melbourne, we were inspired by the economic and social impact Australia's life sciences sector is having, and by the increasing role of new technologies in addressing healthcare inequities.    We valued the opportunity to network with industry peers, explore new projects, and strengthen existing ones, setting the stage for an exciting 2025.    Throughout the week we attended and sponsored several engaging events. We thank:    • Invest Victoria and Global Victoria for their networking luncheon to welcome AmCham Australia, and their Victorian Networking Reception for health, biotech and life sciences professionals, at which welcome addresses were delivered by The Hon. Tim Pallas and Dr Amanda Caples.    • MTPConnect, Nucleus Network and Global R&D Pty Ltd for partnering with us to present ‘The Australian Advantage’ to the visiting delegation from Korea, Japan and Taiwan.    • AusBiotech CEO, Rebekah Cassidy, and Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care, The Hon. 🤝 Exploring Academia-Biotech collaborations at #BioFIT2024 This morning, we delved into one of the key questions shaping the future of health innovation: How can academia and biotech collaborate to bring groundbreaking research to life? 🌟 The session "Academia-biotech collaborations: an alternative itinerary to foster innovation" brought together insights on: ✅ The unique advantages of partnering with biotech over big pharma. ✅ How academic assets can spark biotech interest. ✅ The key factors that define the right biotech partner from an academic perspective. ✅ The challenges and opportunities of these strategic collaborations. Synbiobeta last week was awesome! Maybe one of the best conferences I have attended. Not only were there talks by great scientists like Paul Stamets 🍄 and Craig Venter (picture below), but I reconnected with fermentation people at Genencor/DuPont/IFF, and BASF. Furthermore, I was able to meet many other innovators/service providers/investors during the conference. I feel very blessed to have spent two decades in this field. Although summarizing what I saw in bullet points is difficult, here it goes: • The conference felt very commercial in comparison to when it started, and not in a bad way. This is an indication that biotech has evolved over the past decade from the abstract or medical to the very practical. • The ecosystem is vibrant. There are many start-ups, service providers, innovators and investors from different countries all under one roof. To be candid, I was gladly surprised to see a couple of the Fortune 500 companies I worked for in the conference. • AI 🧠 is impacting everything including biotech. Although there are a lot of initiatives only time will tell which ones are the ones that will pan out commercially. Huge shout-out to Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. and SynBioBeta for providing our start-up with a grant so that we could attend. I won't tag names, but building a start-up, just like raising a child 👶, takes a village. #synbio #synbiobeta #biotech #fermentation
