This week, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the Million Women in Construction Pledge to hire more women into the construction and building trades! Construction companies across the country sign the pledge to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to drastically increasing tradeswomen's access to training, jobs, and leadership opportunities. The industry-wide call urges signers to take action by building partnerships to reach women and girls, and to invest in supportive services such as childcare—all while pledging to create safe, inclusive, and respectful work sites. NEW President Leah Rambo said, “It’s clear—we need more women in the construction and building trades. This requires a comprehensive industry-wide promise. I commend the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Pledge signers for building strategies that break down barriers for women.” #NEWstrongWomen #HardhatHERoes

Interesting Yosof Ewing … I have many thoughts, and I can say that I am treated very well by all of my colleagues (to my face 😏) but simple things such as the toilets are still problematic!! Key pads on doors being preferable not a toilet key hidden in a guys office drawer would be a start! 🤷🏻♀️. That only affects women and the cleaners! But on a serious note - construction generally is at a fork in the road - and regardless of gender - it needs supported and strengthened from the foundation! I attend career events and I genuinely don’t think we will encourage people into construction - regardless of gender, creed, colour - because even those trying to encourage them are becoming disheartened. Small businesses are trying to keep their head above water - some are still paying off debts incurred during ‘C’… The minimum wage, despite being wholly supportive of it, affects SMEs so much, as they cannot afford to put everyone in higher payment bands up by the same amount to maintain the wage structures they have in place! Apprentices are now being faced with lack of spaces as many decide this year that they cannot afford to take apprentices on. Maybe now people will understand that it’s not just about gender, it’s about valuing the supply chain, respecting the trades and paying people on time. Simple solutions - that many cannot or will not adopt. Suggestions/Solutions on a post card … Let’s work together! Scottish Building Federation ACTG - Ayrshire Construction Training Group

I wrote a post yesterday about how males make up most trades in the industry. 🏗️ They don’t make up all of the trades or professions, but I would doubt many would disagree that men typically make up the largest proportion of construction workers.👷♂️ I was corrected by a follower (thank you 🙏) who reminded me about the lack of women in my post. 🚺 The thing is, my original post was written to see what reaction I would get. A social experiment if you will 🧐 I have to say, I wasn’t expecting to be corrected by a man, thank you for that. Is that progress? 👍 I attended the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Scottish Dinner last Friday at Trades Hall in Glasgow. ✨ A keynote speech was given by the fabulous Kim Franklin KC who spoke about how women who were a bit vocal were seen by some to be difficult. 🗣️ I thought her speech was incredible, and I agreed with her sentiments. ✨ Personally speaking, I cannot believe that this kind of inequality is still a thing in the 21st century, and yet here we are. 😔 I advocate for more women in construction as I believe, and my experience tells me, they bring a different energy and set of skills to the table and that ought to be welcomed. 🌟 I am tired of all the machismo and testosterone. The "kill them all" mentality. 😩 We need softer skills. 🤲 We need empathy. ❤️ A steadier hand. ✋ But most of all we need to see and treat women as equals and in many cases our betters. Because in many ways they are. ✨🙏🏽 In order to attract more women into construction I firmly believe we need to focus our efforts on removing a lot of the toxicity at play, I believe paradoxically that women can and already do play a significant role in achieving this. 😊 What do you think about us needing more women in construction? 🚧👷♀️ Let me know in the comments or send me a DM. 💌 #equality #womeninconstruction 📸 I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Kim after the event, a very engaging and warm person. 🤝 Thank you. 🙌

https://lnkd.in/dpfb_ZcV Solutions Now had the honor of tracking #womeninconstruction who are breaking barriers in this male-dominated industry. The times have changed when women were bound by the narratives of the kitchen, tailoring, and soft jobs. Women are now in spaces that had been left for men due to the processes that were termed not-women-friendly. Even with narratives being changed, there are still challenges that women are still facing. However, Mutindo women still persevere and show up. 15 buildings later, the sky is not the limit. Did you also know as a woman you don't have to be lifting bricks and mixing cement to contribute to the construction industry? if you want to know more... click the link to the full story

Do women even want men in construction anymore? ABSOLUTELY YES!! In the last few years, social media posts, conference agendas, and gender diversity training, INCLUDING MY OWN, have focused on the challenges women face and the desire to recruit, advance, and retain more women in the construction industry. I have to imagine that at times men in the industry begin to feel unappreciated or worse that they are being labeled as “the problem”. The reality is; Some men are creating problems…and others are creating solutions. Many men are mentors, advocates, sponsors…and some are adversaries, doubters, and naysayers. And to speak total truth…Women are all of the above as well. To the men who have supported me in my career, and to those that have leaned in to better understand the gender specific challenges I have faced, I want to say THANK YOU! WIC – I would love for you to take the time to tag or mention a man in construction that has supported you and your career.
