For decades, 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 has been a cornerstone of strategic thinking, guiding businesses to optimize activities for profitability. Have you ever implemented a solution that looked perfect on paper but failed to deliver the expected results? 🧐 One major obstacle to sustainability is that it tends to view the world in a linear way, where cause = effects. The limitation of this approach is that it doesn't consider that our world is a lot more complex than that. 2 + 2 doesn't always equal 4 because underlying interactions influence the results you get. Planning interventions gets increasingly challenging – you plan to get a 4 but end up with a 5. It makes you wonder – where did I go wrong? 😕 There's a different approach enabling you to look at the world in a more holistic way: Systems thinking. In the past five years, I've used systems thinking to help me understand the root causes of sustainability challenges instead of focusing on surface-level symptoms. 🤯 It's completely transformed the way I see the world. How do you set priorities in the transformation agenda (when you cannot start all at once)? Environmental, Social and good Governance (ESG) and Sustainability is a very complex subject. Even more so, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed and like "sitting as a rabbit in front of a snake". Carina A. and Raoul Meys asked me, how I started the transformation journey and what worked for me. 🏃 Get started! If you start tomorrow it's already late. 🗺️ Visualise a structure of the picture you have today! No need to be perfect. 🧑🤝🧑 Find other enthusiasts in your network! Together a vision can sprout. 📑 Collect data! No need to be complete. 🔝 Apply Pareto principle! Find the biggest impact / lever. 💡 Initiate lighthouse projects! They shine to be imitated. For me, Sustainability Transformation is a marathon. It lives and grows by engaging with people, initiating change and taking small steps every day. Priorities come with customer demands and regulatory requirements.
