Jaime Martin Pérez, the Basque scientist who is researching organic solar cells in Galicia: https://lnkd.in/dwYnYhzM The researcher from the University of La Coruña (Galicia) is studying how to prevent the degradation of materials so that they can be used in windows that generate electrical current. Although he opted for chemistry when he finished high school, as soon as he had the opportunity to work in a laboratory, researcher Jaime Martin Perez ended up settling in physics. Originally from Bergara (Basque Country), he has an extensive work record working in laboratories in Madrid, Germany, San Sebastian and London. However, after the pandemic he decided to establish himself as a researcher at the University of A Coruña (UDC), where he came into contact with the Oportuniusprogramme, promoted by the ‘Galician Innovation Agency’ with the aim of attracting research talent to the Galician ecosystem. In October 2023, the University of A Coruña obtained for the first time in its history a grant from the European Research Council (known as ERC Consolidator Grant) to carry out over the next five years a project that will investigate the structure of semiconductor polymers with the aim of developing more efficient and stable solar cells. Jaime Martin, lecturer and researcher at the Functional Polymers Laboratory of the Centre for Research in Naval and Industrial Technologies (Citeni) on the Ferrol Campus (Galicia), is leading this initiative, which has raised two million euros and will be carried out entirely at Citeni itself. 💪 👨🎓 PhD student from Łukasiewicz – Krakow Institute of Technology participated at FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024 conference in Manchester 📢 Filip Kateusz from the Center of Materials and Manufacturing Technology managed by Rafał Nowak, D. Eng presented a poster on his project entitled “Synthesis of gradient C/C-SiOC composites with improved thermal degradation resistance”. 👉 This project explores new carbon-carbon composites with a gradient-distributed SiOC phase. The inclusion of the oxycarbide phase enhances resistance to thermal degradation in atmospheric air, while maintaining the desirable properties of traditional carbon-carbon composites, such as high heat capacity and relatively low density. The poster highlighted the project's goals and motivation, proposed a novel materials synthesis route, and outlined the next steps in the investigation. The project is supported by Rymatex., which provides high-quality carbon fibers, and IMCD Group, a distributor of polysiloxane resin used as an organic precursor. 👨🔬 This research is financed by the Polish state budget under Ministry of Science and Higher Education's Pearls of Science I program, project no. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏? My journey through scientific and technological excellence continues. This time, I had the pleasure of being hosted by Professor Alberto Guadagnini and Chiara Recalcati PhD in the Solid-Liquid Interface Nanomicroscopy and Spectroscopy (SoLINano-∑) laboratory, an interdepartmental facility at Politecnico di Milano. The visit was enriched by the participation of PoliMi students from the Department of Energy. The aim was to provide these future engineers with a comprehensive perspective on pursuing #research in both academia and industry, presented from three distinct viewpoints: a professor from one of Europe’s most prestigious universities, a postdoctoral researcher, and an energy sector professional. In the first part of the morning, Chiara shared insights into her PhD work and her current activities, highlighting an impressive project that spans various aspects of research, from experimental setups to the development and application of theoretical models. She effectively conveyed the scientific importance of this #laboratory, where it is possible to leverage a unique combination of Scanning Probe Microscopy techniques and Raman spectroscopy, that fosters fundamental research on physical and chemical processes taking place at solid-liquid interfaces at the nanoscale. To give an idea, potential applications range from assessing source rock potential for #hydrocarbon generation to porosity analysis for #reservoir #characterization, #hydrogen storage, and #CCuS projects. I shared then my journey, from school to my first job in GEOLOG International, up to my current role in GEOLOG TECHNOLOGIES. The doubts I had, the encounters that shaped my career, and the motivations behind my most significant decisions. The engaging discussion began with a simple yet crucial question: "𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯?" This is essential. As straightforward as it may seem, if you don't know where you're going, you'll never reach your destination. #Curiosity, #kindness, #empathy, a lifelong learning mindset, #passion for your work, and #quality-driven decisions were some of the topics we discussed, which serve as the foundation for a rewarding career path - and, I would also say, for a fulfilling life. We also introduced the SPE Italian Section and highlighted how the society focuses on disseminating #knowledge and fostering stronger #connections between industry and academia, as well as across various sectors, as a key part of its mission. Being a member offers students the chance to attend events like this and much more. #Membership is strongly recommended! 😉 See you at the next event!
