Am I the only one feeling submerged in the GenAI tidal wave? As software giants churn out new features seemingly every hour, the struggle to stay afloat is real. Picture this - OpenAI lights up the industry last week, unveiling Sora, a revolutionary text-to-video model, and a fresh memory feature for ChatGPT. Google didn't take a backseat, launching the streamlined and efficient Gemini 1.5. Meanwhile, Nvidia and Stability AI pulled back the curtain on their debuts - RTX chatbot creation and Stable Cascade for image creation, respectively. Cohere, Meta, and Amazon were not to be left out, releasing new AI models for diverse applications. And then there's GROQ, the newcomer making waves in the LLM scene. Elon Musk is getting serious about AI, announcing a $6 billion investment in xAI's model, Grok. To catch up with the current leaders of the pack, xAI is going to build a super-computer using 100,000 GPUs and Elon Musk estimates that by the end of 2024 Grok will be in the same league as ChatGPT and Gemini. Couple this piece of news with OpenAI's launch of the next frontier model - estimated in Nov. 2024, the inevitable Gemini upgrade probably coming around the same time and Meta's launch of a more capable Llama 3 model and 2025 looks like it's gonna be an interesting year in AI.

AI will indeed be as smart as humans soon, but not because it's getting smarter. There are more devious reasons for this conjecture. The pic shows AI telling me that steam might help with a health condition as a home remedy. For the icon, it used the logo of Steam, a video games distribution platform popular among PC gamers like myself. At first, I thought that a human wouldn't make such a mistake. However, I quickly remembered that during a project in my engineering days, I had asked a team member to find out the specs of a helicopter's fan for a concept we were building and she had shared with me the screenshots of a table fan's specs from Amazon. Conclusion? We're not that far from having AI reach human intelligence levels and transcend into the AGI stage but till then, it's best to ask a real doctor or your grandma for such things. Asking AI for advice at this stage is like asking for life advice from a friend who is sailing or drowning in the same boat as yourself.

From the moment you go on the landing page of Sora, you see beautiful paper airplanes flying in flocks just like wild parakeets do, and then at the bottom, you read a line: “All videos used in this page were made using Sora.” That is when reality sets in, and you have to sit back and watch this model's power and capabilities. Sora leads the pack in video generation, creating up to sixty seconds of high-quality visuals perfectly aligned with user prompts. Its competitors in the text-to-AI space lag significantly, and Sora's capabilities are only set to advance further. Beside text, Sora is also capable of creating videos from static images and enhancing existing videos by adding missing frames or extending them, as OpenAI reports. Initially, the product is being launched for red teamers (specialists in areas such as misinformation, hate, and bias, collaborating with OpenAI to enhance product safety) and a selection of visual artists, designers, and filmmakers to gather feedback, the company has stated. However, the company has also recognized the limitations of this emerging tool, pointing out issues with accurately simulating complex scenes' physics ,complex movements and interaction "cause and effect"—for example, showing a cookie as intact even after someone has bitten into it. Only hands-on experience will truly reveal its capabilities, especially considering its late entry into the market, where players like Runway-ML,Pika Labs and Wonder Dynamics already exist. Google's #geminiai made similar claims for their ChatGPT challenger, yet we all know the ultimate outcome.
