Apple recently released the Vision Pro and right now it's a huge cumbersome gadget with a separate battery and a bunch of teething problems. Although it's cool, we'll definitely reach a point where AR will be worn like regular glasses or even contact lenses. Remember Google Glass? They were way ahead of their time and that's why they didn't take off. Now, their time has come. Drivers will view their GPS through augmented reality glasses that provide a head up display (HUD) to project the route, car’s battery reserve, notifications, and other useful information. Online marketplaces will become something out of the movie “Valerian,” where the offline and online worlds merge to an extent making it impossible to feel any boundaries. AI Embedded in AR will also help engineers identify aircraft defects that were previously missed due to human error. Their use cases will be limitless and they will transform the way we interact with our digital world.

Even if we are never able to fully prove out the physics of the multiverse, we think advances in technology will allow us to build a digital version of it in the near future. Obviously we have spent quite a bit of time thinking about this and much of the original research that led us here has been fairly accurate. Today I am not able to leave my house without my smartphone and with the amount of time I spend on it, it might as well be glued to my face. Back in 2013, smartphone proliferation and widespread FOMO accelerated by social media made users compelled to document and share experiences in real-time…sacrificing the opportunity to be in the moment itself. This hasn’t really changed, just go to any concert now. Convenience seems to have won out over privacy and true anonymity remains nearly impossible in the digital age. Cameras are everywhere even on our doorbells, try as you may, you cannot hide. A focus on exclusivity and luxury items that enable unique experiences catered towards higher income earners is still the smart play today. The Vision Pro has been in the market for a few weeks and already people like Sam Altman are calling it the “2nd most impressive technology since the iPhone.” Ignoring for a moment that he doesn’t include his own OpenAI on that list, let’s focus on what the consumerization of Virtual Reality can mean. Tim Cook calls this “the beginning of a new era for computing” where the physical and the digital worlds can blend. I am particularly interested in how this could dovetail into the various computer vision applications out there. Imagine, for instance how this could help in areas like industrial engineering or improving worker safety and productivity. It could now become possible to collect rich visual data on ongoing operations and workflows. That data could be analyzed, and insights extracted. That could then, in turn, drive process improvements for great impact. Conveying this information to the folks on the front line can also become easier and more impactful. The term "#uncannyvalley" has been buzzing lately, but what does it mean? Well, back in 1970, a Japanese roboticist named Masahiro Mori came up with the idea. Basically, it's when something looks almost human but not quite, and it gives people the creeps. Now, Apple has jumped into the mix with their new Vision Pro headset. They've introduced a feature called EyeSight, which puts lifelike eyeballs on the front of the headset that move just like your real eyes. When you use FaceTime, your expressions are mapped onto a digital version of yourself, but some people find it eerie - like they're stuck in the uncanny valley. This concept isn't just limited to tech gadgets. It's also seen in AI and image generation. So, next time you see something that's almost human but not quite, you'll know you're in the uncanny valley.
