The Magic of Events – and of Life itself ✨ If there’s one thing the event industry has taught me, it’s that even the best-laid plans don’t always work out - but it’s what happens *next* that makes it all the more magical. 🪄 We’re used to curveballs: a sudden downpour forcing a show’s cancellation, a headliner backing out, or critical equipment stuck in transit. But seasoned #eventprofs always seem to have a plan B, C, or even D up their sleeves, ready to pivot and turn obstacles into opportunities - just like a magician. 📑 This Saturday, I got a personal reminder of that magic. I’d been eagerly anticipating seeing David Tennant in the Scottish play, but a last-minute illness in the cast threw that plan out the window. The short notice was a downer on what would've been a lovely day out with Mother Heyburn - but we're still hoping for a reschedule! 🤞 After getting to bed after 5am Saturday morning, I could have called it a day but, knowing Joshua Taylor would be heading into Central London to collect something he’d left in our van from the Thorpe Park site visit anyway, we decided to make the most of it. With rush tickets at the ready (thank you TodayTix Group (TTG)), Josh managed to score second-row seats to *Amaze* in the West End - a magic show, fittingly enough! While one of the tricks was foiled by our line of sight, the storytelling and spectacle from Jamie Allan reminded me of something profound: like magic itself, life has a way of surprising us, especially when we’re open to what’s next. ⏭️ So here’s my question to you: how often do we miss out on “Plan B magic” in life by clinging too hard to “Plan A”? ✨ I would love to hear your stories about a time when the unexpected turned out to be *exactly* what you needed! 🪄 #TheMagicOfEvents #ThePowerofEvents #LifeIsMagic #Storytelling

The Best Industry with the Best People: The event industry isn’t for everyone. It’s fast-paced, demanding, and requires a level of dedication that not everyone can handle. But for those of us who live and breathe it, there’s no place we’d rather be. It’s an industry built on teamwork, resilience, and a relentless drive to create something unforgettable. We work alongside some of the hardest-working, most passionate people out there — the kind of folks who don’t quit when things get tough but push through to make sure the show goes on. Whether it's building a venue from the ground up or handling the last-minute chaos, we make it happen because that’s just what we do. As P.T. Barnum once said, "Fortune always favors the brave, and the industry we’re in demands nothing less than courage and heart." Every day, we give it our all, and that’s what makes this industry truly special. So, when 5 p.m. hits at least one day this week, pour yourself a drink and raise it high in salute to "This is The Best Frickin’ Industry!" Here’s to the long hours, the challenges we face head-on, and the incredible moments we create together. #EventIndustry #BestPeople #CreatingMemories #HardWork #Salute

Industry check-in time! Last year, a lot of work went in-house. This season I'm noticing that those in-house teams are overtaxed and are bringing back external support. The challenge there is that teams lose sight of industry costs when they move in-house, so we're having to do a lot of educating around budgets (and crew size, and lead time, and everything else.) Folks like Tim thrive in this environment. They're the connective tissue between in-house production, on-site AV, and external event producers. What are y'all noticing this season? What's working, what's not?

Happy Fall Peak Events Season to all the #EventProfs who celebrate! As I head to my next show - I'm checking in - how are you all doing? Staying busy? Have a bit more breathing room than you expected? Big Shows? Little shows? I'm seeing some interesting patterns in the industry, I'll share them in a future post. #LiveEvents #AVTweeps #CorporateEvents #EventSeason #ProducerLife #TechnicalProducer #TechnicalDirector

"A Lot of work went in-house" When you say "moved in house" I hear two things One, clients have robust internal production teams, both on the event production / internal agency side, and on the video/tech side. Two, hotel in-house AV drives a hard bargain - in house AV companies like Encore, AVMS, Marky's, etc have internal directives to capture as much as 80% of shows that come through the door, and they are playing hardball to get it. To me this means the way to win, as an outside producer, and outside AV provider is - don't fight the in-house. They have leverage we'll never have on the outside, and they will use it against us if we are a threat. The answer? Don't be a threat. Stop fighting in houe and internal teams for the whole pie. Make the pie bigger. Convince internal producers that you're both a team player an an essential extension of their internal team, that lets them scale up and down with the seasons. Let the in-house AV have the parts of the show that make them money, and take on the parts of the show that they never wanted in the first place. If you show them that you understand where their margin lies, and you take on the parts of the show that are a risk, you prove that you're a trusted intermediary between them and your mutual client. I was on property at a swanky beach hotel, and the in-house AV manager was talking to a new consultant - he gestured to me, an outside technical producer, and told the consultant "we want more relationships like this" - where the client brings in their trusted expert as an intermediary, and helps both sides navigate the sale. There's room for all of us to win. You just have to be a team player.

'In the event industry, we are the people without identity. Because we work when no one is watching,' says Katrien Vermeire, Managing Director at John & Jane. 👤 As it's the case for many pro AV companies, the most impactful events are the ones where they rarely get the spotlight. But, this is just the nature of our industry. Behind the scenes, you know you've done the job right when everything is prepped and no more questions are asked by the client.
