The introduction of the nurse identification number would mark a significant step in workforce development within the nursing field. This unique identifier aims to enhance accountability, streamline data collection, and improve workforce analytics. By creating a centralized system, it can help identify trends, inform policy decisions, and ultimately support better patient care. "Our goal is to improve [nurses’] work-life balance and overall well-being.” Dr. Lisa Smithgall, our chief nursing executive, spoke with Becker's Healthcare on our innovative program to eliminate redundant tasks and optimize the electronic health record system to help nurses focus more on patient care. Becker’s writes, “The changes are especially important as more hospital patients are presenting with higher acuity levels. Dr. Smithgall said the hospital is still in recovery mode after losing a significant number of nurses during the pandemic. At the pandemic's peak, nurse turnover rate reached 24%. Now, it's 13.5% — the lowest in the system's history.” "We’re looking at ways to eliminate duplication, streamline workflows and reduce inefficiencies — especially in a resource-limited environment where vacancies are high and patient acuity is greater than ever," said Dr. Smithgall. This initiative is important because of our rural location and how it has impacted our recruitment to the area. "We’ve seen a 20% decline in nursing program enrollment in our region since the pandemic, dropping from 500 annual graduates to 400 between 2022 and 2024. Despite this, we’ve been successful in capturing more graduates each year and maintaining strong relationships with nursing programs,” said Dr. Smithgall. The nursing profession is something I hold in very high esteem – my mother’s a nurse and a ton of my friends from back home are nurses. They're the faces of your local hospitals, health systems and I’d go as far to say communities, they're the ones on the frontline providing patient care (and often times patient’s family care)! But since COVID (and well before that too) we’re seeing an increase in burnout and staffing shortages. With that in mind, I’m incredibly excited to announce that International Performance Management Institute (IPMI) is hosting our first annual Chief Nursing Institute! The event aims to address the issues that are keeping Nurse Executives up at night and a forum to collaborate and equip our nurses with ways to move forward. Executive nursing leaders are at the forefront of engaging frontline staff and representing them in interactions with the C-Suite. Our first ever Chief Nursing Institute will bring together 65 nursing executives this November 3-5 at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando - so if you're interested in attending, want to share this with your CNO or just want to look at the agenda, feel free to shoot me an "InMail" Over the course of the event we’ll be touching on 5-key areas 1. Staffing and Workforces Issues 2. Patient Safety and Quality of Care 3. Compliance and Regulatory Change 4. Technology Integration and Innovation 5. Financial Pressures and Resource Allocation Check out our opening panel session for a sneak peak at some content to come! I also wanted to shoutout Nas Panwar, who not only brought together a group of great speakers, created a timely agenda, but she also spearheaded the development of a brand new conference. I can't wait to see what will inevitably be a great event! #ChiefNursingOfficer #ChiefNurseExecutive #Nursing

I'm thrilled to share my blog, "Nurse Reimbursement: Redefining Nursing’s Value," published in The Nursing Beat, about my experience at the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement’s Legislative Summit. The piece explores the evolution of nursing in the U.S., from the 1920s when private duty nurses provided economic independence for women, to the 1930s when hospitals began bundling nursing services into room rates. This shift made the economic impact of nursing services invisible and reduced nurses to costs in hospital budgets. Today, this lack of a direct reimbursement model has significant consequences, including understaffing and burnout, which ultimately affects patient care. Read the full article to learn more about the challenges and implications for the nursing profession. #NursesOnLinkedin #HealthcareOnLinkedin

The article from Healthcare IT News discusses the ongoing challenges around nurse staffing ratios and efforts to strike a balance between adequate staffing levels and access to care. It highlights that it is National Nurses Week 2024, celebrating the over 5 million registered nurses in the U.S., but staffing shortages remain a critical issue overshadowing the celebration. Some federal and state legislators are seeking to mandate patient-caregiver ratios to improve care quality and reduce nurse burnout. However, organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA) and American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) support evidence-based, flexible staffing ratios rather than mandated, standardized ratios. They recommend staffing be determined with input from nurses based on factors like patient acuity, admissions, nurse experience, unit design, and benchmarked ratios. The article notes the typical rule of thumb is a 1:4-5 ratio on medical-surgical units, 1:3-4 on intermediate units, and 1:2 in ICUs. It discusses the need for proactive planning, empowering nurses in decision-making, using incentives for challenging shifts, and balancing staffing needs with budgets. Effective practices include conducting staffing analyses, using resource pools, communicating action plans, surveying nurse satisfaction, benchmarking ratios, and evaluating patient feedback. https://lnkd.in/eW-q6SrD #healthcare #nursing

The latest insights from AMN Healthcare's Nurses in 2024 report paint a promising picture for our nursing community. Survey data reveals a significant shift in sentiments, with fewer nurses expressing intentions to leave their roles compared to previous years. This is a testament to the collective efforts poured into enhancing retention strategies post-pandemic. However, our journey toward sustainable nursing excellence is far from over. The findings also shed light on an emerging concern: workplace violence. Disturbingly, a February report by National Nurses United revealed that 60% of nurses have been compelled to change or contemplate leaving their jobs due to incidents of workplace violence. As nursing leaders, it's imperative that we remain vigilant in safeguarding the well-being of our frontline heroes. We must continue to advocate for safer work environments and prioritize initiatives aimed at preventing and addressing instances of violence in healthcare settings. Let's celebrate the strides we've made in retention efforts while remaining steadfast in our commitment to tackling the challenges that lie ahead. Together, we can create a nurturing and supportive environment where every nurse thrives. #NursingLeadership #WorkplaceSafety #HealthcareExcellence
