💥 The key difference between basic research and applied research lies in their purpose, goals, and practical applications: Key Summary: Basic Research = "Knowledge for knowledge's sake" Applied Research = "Knowledge for practical use" Both types of research are interdependent. Basic research provides the foundation for applied research, and applied research often generates new questions for basic research. #BasicResearch #AppliedResearch #PhDLife #ResearchIsKey #ScientificResearch

The Fruit of Knowledge, Not the Tree It's disheartening to see so much energy spent on criticizing the publication venues of scientific research. While it's important to maintain high standards, let's not forget the core principle: The fruit of knowledge, not the tree it grows on, is what nourishes the mind. Let's celebrate the dissemination of knowledge, regardless of the platform. Quality research, innovative ideas, and groundbreaking discoveries should be our focus, not the journal name. #science #research #openaccess #academicfreedom #knowledge

Why It’s Important to Be Stupid in Research: Reflections from an Applied Psychologist As a researcher in applied psychology and organisational behavioural expert, I came across an article that profoundly resonated with me: the importance of embracing stupidity in research. Here are my thoughts on the five key takeaways: 1. Doing research is hard, even harder when it matters. In applied psychology, impactful research often deals with complex, messy human behaviors. The harder the research, the greater the potential for meaningful insights. 2. Research is harder than demanding courses. Courses provide structured answers, but research plunges us into ambiguity. For organizational behavior researchers, this often means confronting unpredictable variables, like workplace dynamics, culture, or human emotions. 3. Uncertainty is inherent in research questions. In psychology, it’s rare to ask a question and find a single, definitive answer. But this uncertainty drives creativity, pushing us to refine questions and challenge assumptions. 4. If you don’t feel stupid, you’re not trying hard enough. This one hits home. Great research is humbling. It requires us to acknowledge what we don’t know, be vulnerable, and explore beyond our comfort zones. 5. Comfort with being stupid leads to discovery. In organizational research, the most groundbreaking insights often come from embracing the unknown—be it through unconventional methodologies or challenging norms. Feeling “stupid” isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength. It reflects curiosity, perseverance, and the courage to explore uncharted territories.
PhD Students - Why it is important to be stupid in research? Here are 5 things I learned from this this article. 1. Doing research is hard. It is even harder to do important research. 2. Doing research is harder than taking very demanding courses. 3. You can't be 100% sure about the correctness of your research questions. 4. If you don't feel stupid in research, it means you are not really trying. 5. The more comfortable you become with being stupid, the more likely you will make big discoveries. I'll discuss these 5 points in this week's newsletter. Subscribe here: www.smartresearcher.me #research #phd
