The Health Equity and Access to Care (HEAC) project was a community-engaged research project that involved focus groups and key informant interviews designed to examine healthcare segregation in New York City (NYC). The project utilized a multi-faceted community-engaged approach that involved stakeholders from four different sectors (municipal institutions, civil society groups, academic/research and business entities) to recruit a diverse, broad-based sample of New Yorkers who accessed care within a year of participating in the study. https://lnkd.in/gwHKhHWh

As a physician and record holder, you're keenly aware of how zip codes serve as indicators of socioeconomic status, influencing healthcare access and outcomes. Higher-income areas typically offer better healthcare facilities, insurance coverage, and preventive care opportunities. Conversely, lower-income neighborhoods face barriers like provider shortages, transportation issues, and financial constraints, leading to delayed diagnoses and poorer management of health conditions. Environmental factors in certain zip codes, such as pollution and access to healthy resources, also impact health. Addressing these disparities demands comprehensive strategies, including policy improvements, social determinant interventions, and health equity promotion. Your expertise and advocacy play a pivotal role in advancing these efforts for improved community well-being.

“The Commonwealth Fund, a private U.S. foundation which supports independent research on health care issues, released the 2024 State Health Disparities Report. It compares medical outcomes for people of different races and ethnicities in each state, and ranks how well each state’s health system addresses medical conditions for each racial and ethnic group.” The latest report “shows racial and ethnic disparities persist in health care access, quality, and outcomes across the nation.” https://lnkd.in/eSSSTmZh

Did you know...that Episcopal Health Foundation is based in Houston and was founded in 2013 by The Episcopal Diocese of Texas upon the transfer of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System? Bishop C Andrew Doyle led the effort to use more than $1 billion in proceeds to start a foundation that would reshape the way the Episcopal Church engages the community and change the way we think about health. EHF chose to focus on improving community health, rather than just health care, because the opportunity for good health starts long before you need to see a doctor. Health systems need scalable solutions to address non-medical drivers of health like access to healthy foods, having safe places to exercise, affordable health insurance coverage, and much more. EHF was created as a community-based philanthropy to spark transformative change within the diocese’s 80-county service area that now serves more than 15 million Texans. Mainebiz is gearing up to present its 2024 Health Care Forum on June 5, and this year's topic is an especially timely one. An expert panel will explore "The Challenges and Opportunities of Older Adult Health in Maine" — with a focus on why business leaders need to recognize the impact of these issues. In January, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Aging and Disability Services published a needs assessment that included these eye-opening numbers. ✔️Maine's median age of 44, already the oldest in the U.S., is expected to rise to 49 by 2050. ✔️Mainers who are at least 65 currently make up 22% of the state's population, and that portion is expected to swell to 29% by 2050. ✔️In a survey of 3,094 older Mainers, 19% had fallen within the past six months. ✔️23% of those in the survey reported they are concerned about their memory abilities. ✔️5% of the respondents don't have enough money for food, and 11% rely on food assistance programs. The Mainebiz Health Care Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, from 7:30-10:30 a.m., at the Hilton Garden Inn, 5 Park St., Freeport. Systemic action at the state level is essential to comprehensively address the major drivers of low-value health care spending and monopoly pricing, say Elliott S. Fisher and Carrie H. Colla of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Christopher F. Koller of the Milbank Memorial Fund, and Alena Berube in a new Milbank Memorial Fund issue brief. The authors identify four pillars of reform to contain costs and improve health and health care: 1) comprehensive oversight and spending growth targets, 2) global hospital budgets, 3) mandatory all-payer accountable care organizations, and 4) pricing regulations. The brief expands on their recent Perspective in The New England Journal of Medicine. The authors argue that a “comprehensive approach with all-payer, all-provider participation is essential to push back effectively against health care industry efforts to extract additional revenue from the American public.”

https://lnkd.in/eKciDViU A nice article that kind of explains why places like Chesapeake Health Care are so important. (Let's go ahead and call it crucial.) But it's important to remember that "underserved" doesn't mean "backwoods-can I get cell service-are you sure there's running water" communities. Places like the Eastern Shore need providers, and there's sooooooo much this place has to offer. If you want to hear more about what we bring to the table, drop me a note! #CHC #underservedcommunities
