I was left thirsty after this film... Monk is a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. The film tackles important issues of: 1. High achievement and social mobility 2. Family trauma, gender roles & aging parents 3. Authenticity and the burden of authentic living. Earning a wage and navigating a society that requires a bright mind to confirm to damaging stereotypes. I fully appreciate the popularity of the film. BUT I was left curious and disappointed by the ending. Here are my takeaways: 1. He conceded to the stereotypes by giving the studio the violent ending they required. Therefore playing into their hands. 2. I was unclear how he remedied conceding to the studios demand for flat lining the black experience 3. What's the takeaway message for aspirational black folks who battle with the same issues. Should we concede? #americanfiction #jeffreywright #cordjefferson I took away a few messages unhelpful messages. 1. Concede 2. Give them what they want 3. Get paid. And what was the symbolic.meaning of the man in the straw hat?

Given the increasing global interest in diverse narratives and the significant growth of the African film industry, a novel film festival focused on celebrating Black American, European, and African cinema and showcasing the vibrant growth of these film industries on a global platform, called ASWAD Film Festival will hold in Dubai in January 2025. Chukwuma Jason Njoku, an African technology and entertainment entrepreneur and Aswad Film Festival Chair, expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “Aswad is not just a film festival; it’s a celebration of our stories and our culture. We aim to create a platform that amplifies Black voices in cinema while fostering connections within the industry. The Black American, European, and African film industries are experiencing unprecedented growth, and it’s time we had a world-class festival to showcase our talents.” Read more here about Aswad Film Festival - https://lnkd.in/esz-GF6z

I speak to the DP IB Theatre curriculum and assessment. It has managed, I believe, to almost strike a balance between requiring the articulation of theory, tradition and practice knowledge and the performance/presentation of examples of their application. However, it is still too difficult to achieve the top band and there are still vagaries in the criteria rubrics that continue to lend themselves to subjective judgement and semantic argument. Likewise, regrettably, with MYP Theatre assessments and criteria. It is an issue that turns away prospective theatre students (and puts off parents) but it is not the most significant issue. The appropriation of Group 6 by leadership to expand second, double-dipping science and humanities subject options is, justified largely by myths about prerequisites, a dearth of informed career counselling regarding the arts and transferable, future readiness skills and the race to the bottom by students driven by tradition to achieve financial security in early career pathways. #Group6Arts #DPSubjectSelection #Prerequisites #TransferableSkills #FutureReadySkills #CareerCounselling #DPAssessment

"There’s a long tradition of people in the creative professions standing up and speaking about things going on in the world that affect people, from writers like Jonathan Swift or Charles Dickens, artists like Hogarth, or film directors like Mike Leigh or Ken Loach. I just consider myself, and I say this with humility, to be part of that. I think the arts are political with a very small “p”, in the sense that we are reflecting humanity back at itself." - Juliet Stevenson

This made me smile from ear to ear! Although this post focuses on Eurocentric education system and the lack of diversity of teachers. FACTS! I am reflective of what I/we do have. As my son sits his last GCSE exam tomorrow, I am reflective of how important it is to celebrate 🥳 the big and small wins in our children. Reflecting on how important it is, to see representation, that demonstrates anything is possible. for my son, he has an army of Black Excellence in his parents, Aunty,Uncles, cousins and close friends. Putting aside the lack of diversity in teachers for a moment. What if a child or young people wasn’t celebrated for their wins, for their achievements, for being an awesome human being. What if there wasn’t a trusted adult to speak life into a young person, to demonstrate anything is possible? Well we know the answer (I’m making an assumption you know the answer!) Unless you live under a rock 🪨, the rise in MH amongst children and young people, the lack of vital youth provision. This isn’t just about funding. This is also about community. African proverb “a person is a person because of other people” Which means I am, because you are. Anything and everything is possible.

I am actually excited to receive Top Faculty Paper Award on our paper exploring media consumption as a form of activism for African diasporic communities. In this paper, we propose a framework, Black diasporic imagination to capture the ways in which ideals of blackness are evolving in film, television, and music. We suggest this movement toward infusing African aesthetics and into US media is an act of destabilizing colonial constraints of black racial identity. We also argue that our support of the art in this digital, streaming era is another way in which we challenge media systems that center and privledge ”White” narratives. #nca
