⚡Time Dependent CFD Simulation: Vortex Shedding⚡ What is Vortex shedding in the first place? Vortex shedding is a phenomenon, when the wind blows across a structural member, vortices are shed alternately from one side to the other, and where alternating low-pressure zones are generated on the downwind side of the structure giving rise to a fluctuating force. Momentum, how do we catch it and where does it take us? The momentum equation plays a key role in understanding fluid flow. At its simplest, it says an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force 🌊 In computational fluid dynamics (CFD), we break fluids down into many small conceptual particles and watch how they interact. The momentum equation looks at the rate of change of momentum of these particles within a control volume. 📈 It balances three things: accumulation, convection and diffusion of momentum due to pressure and viscous forces 🤯 Accumulation accounts for how momentum changes over time within the control volume. Convection considers momentum entering and leaving with the bulk flow. Diffusion covers transfer of momentum between particles💡 Properly applying the momentum equation gives insight into fluid behavior. From simple to complex, incompressible to compressible, it helps explain how flows develop and objects move through fluids 🧮 Of course, this skips many nuances - like tensor notation, Reynolds averaging and more. The surrounding environment is displayed in a mesh environment to depict how the landscape interacts with the environment and whether there are any interferences. CFD also helps to depict the stresses that are applied to the design and whether it can have effects on the performance. ⚡Large Eddy Simulation (LES) by our buddies at Aerotherm Large Eddy Simulations or LES, as it is more commonly referred to, can capture intricate eddies that are more prominent in the wake of an object as fluid flows over it. LES requires much more computational time than the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models, which are used more frequently commercially. CFD Tuesday In this weeks CFD Tuesday we are looking at a feature in STAR-CCM+ called Mesh morphing, combined with the isentropic gas relations.  The isentropic relation defines how the volume, density, pressure and temperature are related for a change in volume.   When we shrink the volume adiabatically, by moving the bottom wall up, we compress the gas, increasing the density, pressure and temperature. Then, when we increase the volume again, the density, pressure and temperature return to their original values.    This shows that mesh morphing is a good method to model this motion.    Although this is a simple example, there are (endless/many) applications for mesh morphing.
