Today 10-12! We are constantly told that there is a mental health crisis. Research tells us that it is no longer 1 in 4 people who have a mental health problem - the figure is now closer to 9 in 10. But what is really going on? Should we continue with soaring numbers of drug prescriptions, and calls for more services and research? Or do we need to ask more fundamental questions about our rising levels of unhappiness and despair? In this provocative talk, Dr Lucy Johnstone will challenge current thinking about this issue and suggest different ways forward. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion. Today is Self Injury Awareness Day. Self injury is most common among adolescents and young adults and onset typically occurs around age 13 or 14, according to the National Library of Medicine. To get to the root of this issue, we must advocate for adolescents with mental health needs and spread awareness of the risks associated with mental health crises and adolescent self-harm. A diagnosis, when approached improperly, can be limiting. When we lean on a diagnosis too heavily, we make it harder for ourselves to change behavior. A self-diagnosis makes this pattern of behavior even more likely to emerge. Diagnoses are useful. But they are also fluid and flexible. They can change, which can affect treatment approaches. When we self-diagnose, we are putting ourselves in a box that (without professional help) we don't know how to get out of. In the race to economic (market-driven) prosperity, mental health has become the "maximum suffering" aspect of one's life. The need for periodic psychiatric checkups (along with the routine health checkups) has become critical, in such testing times 😐 #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #healthiswealth

What is the current state of mental health in 2024? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that 57.8 million adults live with some form of mental illness. Ninety percent of the public think there is a mental health crisis in the United States today, with half of young adults and one-third of all adults reporting that they have felt anxious either always or often in the past year, according to a 2022 survey conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and CNN. One-third of respondents could not get the mental health services they needed. Don’t allow yourself or your child to become another statistic. There is an expanding number of new ways to treat addictions and mental health disorders, from the use of hallucinogenics to transcranial stimulation to artificial intelligence. I do not wish to stand in the way of progress, but I would like to note that one thing that has historically worked to treat disorders is taking time to listen to people who are suffering. Take some time today to call someone who is struggling and listen to what they have to say. #recoveryispossible #itstartswithyou
