Interesting report from Teach First on how to address teacher shortages by attracting Gen Z to teaching. Targeting funding to schools supporting the highest levels of disadvantage is crucial! In addition to investments in secondments for teachers and strategic partnerships with businesses or international education institutions, government needs to invest in developing teachers’ digital skills. This would help them make better use of #AI and #digital tools to reduce workload and improve learner outcomes.

📰 Today we've released a new report that sets out how we can attract Gen Z to teaching. We commissioned Public First to poll 16 to 24-year-olds on their attitudes to careers, particularly teaching. 📊 The research found that a significant pool of Gen-Z have an initial interest in the teaching profession but many want a less linear career and would value professional experiences from different sectors. This group believe it would be easier to do something innovative in a sector outside of teaching.  We can change this perception by expanding professional development opportunities for teachers, including secondments to relevant industry sectors outside the classroom, enabling them to return with new skills, enthusiasm, and energy. 🔗 Our Summer Projects connect current and past Teach First trainees with non-sector based professional development. It’s an opportunity to build on career development objectives and take new skills back to school. Adopting this approach through a central pot of funding, innovative partnerships with businesses, or international education institutions could deliver this at a national scale.
