Informative study that highlights the role of doctors' empathy in the treatment and outcomes of chronic low back pain. Empathy is not only a soft skill but also a critical part of effective patient care. It affects patient-physician relationship. But what is empathy? A question/debate: Can physician empathy be taught ? I know of several health care institutions that have empathy training for their staff. What has been your empathy-related experience in your patient-physician relationship? Doctors may not have time for empathy in a 5-10 minute visit, depending.

3 Things that bother me in the physical medicine space in health care. 1. Cookie cutter treatment plans Too many PTs are prescribing 12 weeks of the same exercises for every shoulder “impingement” syndrome. Many chiropractors are adjusting patients 3 times per week for 12 weeks without exploring root cause. 2. Generic diagnoses without explanation Getting diagnosed with “tendinitis” without understanding what’s causing it doesn’t do the patient any good, and if anything creates fear. Half the time these types of diagnoses are wrong anyway so we should stop labeling them and just treat the dysfunction. 3. Treating pathoanatomy rather than dysfunction Recent studies have suggested that outcomes are better when we focus on dysfunction rather than pathoanatomy (patho = disease or problem, anatomy = structure. Pathoanatomy = problem of a specific structure like a disc bulge or tendinitis). Pathoanatomy Example - a patient gets an MRI and sees they have a disc bulge. They then receive treatment for that disc bulge. Dysfunction Example - a patient gets an MRI and sees they have a disc bulge. Physical examination reveals that they have limited lumbar extension and core muscle weakness. Treatment consists of restoring lumbar extension and strengthening the core. Patient outcomes are better when treating dysfunction rather than anatomy. What have you seen/heard in conservative MSK care that you disagree with?

This post is especially meant for all the fellows and post graduates in IR …. Who wish to be heroic and find it difficult to accept defeat 😈 What matters first? Patient or our success ? Before putting my blade on any patient, I ask for help and say, "God make me do what's best for this patient.” This prayer gives me immense serenity to accept what cannot be done and a great courage to make a decision on when to stop. It should never be - “make me somehow successful and help me get the catheter across ! “ as I have noticed that sometimes our fear of failure never lets us give up and one might end up doing more harm to the patient As healthcare professionals, our ultimate goal is to provide the best care possible for our patients. But how do we define success in patient care? Is it getting our catheter across to difficult locations and feeling proud? Or is it having the courage to make a decision on when to stop and accept what cannot be done? I believe that the mindset of accepting failure and humility with success is the true meaning of success in patient care. It's important to understand that we need to do what's best for the patient, even if it means not getting the desired result with interventional radiology procedure. Sometimes, knowing when to stop is of utmost importance for the greatest good of the patient. Let's strive for success mindset that puts the patient first. #successmindset #healthcare #patientcomesfirst #interventionalradiology

What a great Saturday joining 300 students and graduates from Health Coaches Academy, with insightful sessions from inspirational guest speakers Joanna Harper and Sunil Kumar MBBS MRCA FCAI FRSA FBSLM DipIBLM (MBBS, MRCA, FCAI, FRSA, FBSLM, DipIBLM). Their presentations on trauma and perioperative care offered invaluable knowledge and sparked thoughtful discussions on these crucial topics. The event highlighted the growing body of evidence supporting the impact of lifestyle medicine on patient outcomes. Studies show that high-protein, anti-inflammatory diets reduce complications (Annals of Surgery), pre-operative exercise decreases mortality by 30% (Cochrane Review), optimized sleep protocols lower infection rates by 25% (American Journal of Surgery), and stress management, by reducing cortisol levels, leads to improved recovery (Journal of Psychosomatic Research). It is inspiring to see the vital role Health Coaches play in making this support more accessible, and I’m grateful to be part of an organization dedicated to training high-quality professionals in this field. 🙌🏼 #amandablighwellness #Healthcoachesacademy #HCA #HealthandWellness #Health #Wellness #Coaches #Coaching #training #traumainformed #preoperativecare #livebetter
