This morning I watched a documentary by PBS on HBCUs called, "We are Rising". Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been the bedrock of many Black cultural phenomena and sacred sites of radical organizing and revolutionary thought. For centuries we have seen them devalued, brutalized, and erased from movement spaces. When I was working at Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi it was my pleasure to stand up the first HBCU generation action chapter in the state and one of only 13 in the country alongside Antoine Dandridge. Watching the students define themselves, distribute resources to their campus, and advocate for issues that were important to them has been one of the highlights of my career. However I can't help but think about what they could've done if they were given more. More people power. More money. More mentorship. More support. In 2022, there were 99 HBCUs located in 19 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Most of these are located in the South. HBCUs have missed out on more than $13 billion they should have gotten in the last 3 decades or so, according to letters the Biden administration sent to the governors of 16 states appealing to them to invest more money in HBCUs. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack sent letters to the governors of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. It's not enough for folks to state that Black people are going to be the most harmed by whatever new conservative policy is introduced into the public platform. Oppression has long lived at the doors of Black folks homes. Conservatives and "progressives" alike have ignored our plight in the name of addressing the needs of the majority (white, middle and upper class people). Now more than ever we need groups to make sure that they're including historically Black colleges and universities into the fold. This is not a call for saviorism. HBCUs know what they need to support their communities. It's a call to allocate resources to some of the most marginalized of us who just need support to advocate for their own causes and find justice as they define it.

💙 this short video explaining empathy! I use it in my workshops all the time to teach what empathy misses are. The eyeroll gets me every time! 😂
I can’t believe it’s been ten years since we first met that damn “Wanna sandwich?” empathy-fail deer! Thank you Katy Ross (Gobblynne) and The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) for turning this talk into an amazing cartoon. ❤️, BB https://lnkd.in/gVFU5eW8

Such a great video, deffintely worth watching! The distinction between empathy and sympathy is so powerful! Sympathy often feels like trying to put a Band-Aid on something, while empathy creates real connection. What are some ways you’ve found helpful to avoid the 'silver lining' trap when someone is sharing something hard with you? #EmpathyMatters #EmotionalConnection #ActiveListening

Choosing empathy over judging or sympathy can improve the way you relate and respond, not only in the workplace but with strangers, friends and family. https://lnkd.in/eK6wkV_g ⬆️Here is a quick (very visual)3 min video that you can watch to understand this difference.

I have been a big Brené Brown fan for many years. Her messages really help me grow personally and professionally - and her messages give me the insights, language and tools to work through “my stuff”. Still more work to do - but growth is growth! The empathy video she is celebrating below has been something I have shared many times in my life. When I was diagnosed the second time with breast cancer, I put a link to the video in one of my posts on my medical blog. At that time, my wife and I were reeling from the news (again) and we had a hard time answering the inevitable “let me know what I can do to help” or the “at least….” statements that continually rolled in. (“At least they caught it early”, “at least it hasn’t spread”, “at least you have a supportive spouse”, “at least Quinn is older this time around - I can’t imagine how you did this when he was a toddler”.) This post is not meant to shame anyone - we have a loving community that has supported us through cancer more than once and they did an amazing job - me and my family are grateful! I truly believe people are doing the best that they can. I am still doing my work to stop myself from being the “wanna sandwich” person with those that I know and love. (Side note: My wife and I say “wanna sandwich” to each other when we have an empathy fail moment or we witness those types of statements from others. In the moment it makes us mindful and it provides a moment of laughter - which is nice, especially in hard times.) My goal of this post is to recognize the gift of life changing messages like this that help give us the words at a time when we can’t come up with them on our own. Empathy is hard to do and sitting with someone while they are hurting and not “fixing it” or “at leasting it” is extremely hard for many - including me. This short video on empathy has the power to educate many and helps us all do the best that we can for those that we know and love. 💜 #empathy #empathyfail #brenebrown #doingthebestwecan

One of my favorite videos! This short video provides such a clear message around empathy (and how it differs from sympathy). It really changed the way I thought about and intentionally practice empathy. Highly recommend giving it a watch!
