When it comes to serving customers, we have all been taught that #customers come first. But do we really do that? That is the question that popped up at dinner in #Lisbon last night. Typically restaurants don’t adjust quantities for single diners. So when you order an appetizers you get a quantity that by itself is a meal. Typically I would skip the entree in such a case. Not at the restaurant last night. The waiter asked me if I would like to adjust the appetizer for a single diner!! Of course….yes. I got to speak to the Chef/owner and he said that adjusting to customer’s needs is actually business savvy. He told me making this small adjustment ensures that an entree is also ordered.. Great lesson for those of us who live and die by customers likes and dislikes. #customersat #business #sales

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚 10-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞! Last Friday, my wife and I dined at a cozy restaurant inside a small local casino. The food was delicious, affordable, and the staff were friendly, making it a delightful #CustomerExperience. In the middle of our meal, we noticed chefs carrying huge trays out to the casino floor. Curious, we asked our waitress what was happening. She said, "We randomly give out treats to our guests. Today, it's freshly baked 2" x 2" brownies, and you'll get one too." We were pleasantly surprised. This small casino stands out by offering unique perks to attract value-oriented players. They provide looser slots, decent food at low prices, better rewards, free treats, and personalized #CustomerService. For the cost of a few cents, the free brownie made us feel special. It’s a reminder that understanding your customers and exceeding their expectations is crucial for your #BusinessStrategy. How many email newsletters can you send until your customers think you are a pain? Well, that depends on your service you are offering. However, there is one industry that can get away with sending at least one email newsletter per WEEK if it is done correctly - and that is the restaurant industry. If you own a local restaurant, most of your customers will welcome weekly offers and specials that you send to their email.

How would you handle a dissatisfied diner? At some point in your restaurant career, it's likely that you'll encounter a customer who feels unsatisfied with some aspect of their experience. Your interviewer may ask this question to better understand how you would react in that situation so they can decide whether your response fits with their restaurant's philosophy. Example answer: "No matter what the issue was, I would listen and acknowledge the diner's concerns and apologize if appropriate. If I learned about the complaint before the end of the meal, I would try to fix the situation, depending on what it was, by offering a move to another table, a replacement meal or a discount if it's within the restaurant's policy. If I did not learn about the complaint until after the meal was complete, I would like to offer a coupon for a future visit to encourage the diner to give us an opportunity to provide a better experience."

Shameless plug: have you heard of SixPlus? This article by Alina Dizik in the The Wall Street Journal sums up why we started the company: because it's very hard to get a table for 7 on OpenTable or Resy, and for good reason. Re. prix fixe menus, I understand people like the idea of ordering off a menu. They like the idea of choice. However, the impact on service is far greater than most people imagine. Have you ever sat at a table of 20 and watched 1 waiter take individual orders in a noisy restaurant? It's so much more pleasant to walk in, have pre-ordered family-style apps on the table, choose from a limited menu, or have no choice at all. It feels more like eating in someone's home where the host provides the meal and you eat what you like. Restaurants can usually cater to one or two individuals' dietary restrictions better than they can provide a la carte ordering for the whole group. And whenever possible, get a room! It'll be more pleasant for your party and everyone else in the restaurant. For the small price of a minimum food & beverage spend, and maybe a small room fee, you can laugh as loudly as you like for 3 glorious hours. Thank you Alina Dizik for writing and inspiring dialogue on the topic!

I'm connecting more than ever with food and restaurant founders but it still staggers me the amount of restaurant chains and independents that exist in the UK. So here's my question for you all... How are you standing out in this market? Drop a comment! 🤳 I'll post a follow up to this with my thoughts so stay tuned... 💭
