Can sports be the next game-changer for the tourism sector? While mega-events like the Olympics often take center stage, the year-round sporting activities – from leisurely cycling on the scenic Liguria di Ponente and Abruzzo tracks to sailing around the Italian coastline – are making a quiet but significant impact. With its diverse landscapes, Italy is seeing a surge in sports wellness tourism. Cycling tracks attract enthusiasts and professionals, while skiing and sailing draw crowds seasonally. Golf courses and indoor racing events bring in athletes and their support teams and families, all contributing to a vibrant, sports-driven economy. Notably, regional approaches to marketing sports as a central facet of tourism could redefine local economies. 🚴♂️⛳️⛷ The Associazione dei Geografi Italiani reflects on this trend, asserting that geography and sports create an "unprecedented driving force" for tourism and economic growth (https://lnkd.in/dGC9yHH7). In what ways can sports tourism be further harnessed for economic growth? Share your insights below and join the discussion on how sports can redefine travel and bring vitality to regions year-round. #SportsTourism #EconomicGrowth #ExperienceItaly

One significant trend is the increasing popularity of sports events as travel destinations. Major sporting events like the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, and Super Bowl attract millions of tourists globally, driving significant economic impact to host cities and countries. Another trend is the rise of niche sports tourism, where travelers seek out destinations specifically for activities like golf, skiing, surfing, or marathon running. This trend reflects a growing desire among travelers to engage in active and experiential tourism, often in scenic or unique locations. Technology has also transformed sports tourism, making it easier for fans to travel for their favorite sports. Live streaming, virtual reality, and social media have connected fans worldwide, encouraging them to attend events in person for a more immersive experience. Furthermore, sustainable sports tourism is becoming increasingly important. Travelers are more conscious of their environmental impact, leading to initiatives like green sports events, eco-friendly accommodations, and carbon offset programs. #sportstourism #sportsindustry #tourismindustry #sportsbusiness #sports #travelandtourism #sportsinnovations

Ditch the sun lounger for something a bit more adventurous. Do you get itchy feet just sitting by the pool, or chilling on the beach? I know I do. For me it’s great to have a couple of days to unwind but then I start getting restless. If this sounds familiar, here are 2 ideas. One will give you a holiday full of adventure and the other is the perfect mix of activity and chill: Slovenia Though popular as a ski destination, shouldn’t be overlooked for a summer holiday. It offers stunning scenery, including Lake Bled, the Julian Alps and even a small stretch of coastline. The capital, Ljubljana is a quaint city with cobblestone streets, colourful buildings and riverside cafes to sit and watch the world go by. It is also not short of outdoor activities to choose from, with hiking, cycling, kayaking and rafting being among the most popular. Turkey You will probably notice that Turkey is advertised a lot on the TV right now and is increasingly popular with British tourists. Partly due to the beautiful coastline and partly because of the attractive exchange rate with the Turkish Lira. I’d recommend The Masmavi Resort in Belek, which is an excellent 5-star resort with a blue flag beach and pools of all different sizes. And, when you get bored of the sunbed, there’s table tennis, beach volleyball, archery, aerobic classes, tennis and lots more. I can promise that you won’t get bored. For more ideas for those looking for a bit more adventure this year, just click on the link below: https://lnkd.in/dBnfidzv #SunandAdventure #AdventureTime #ExploreMore #EpicAdventures #OutdoorExploration #DaretoExplore

This is Sam Haddad doing what she does best and telling it like it is. A gondola like the one proposed up to the glacier above La Grave is part of the growing trend towards 'last chance tourism'. It will see people flocking to see the glacier before it's gone. This is not only happening in La Grave, it is repeated in Chamonix with visitors to the Mer de Glace, in New Zealand at the Franz Joseph and Fox glaciers and elsewhere. It means more development and more infrastructure to eek every last euro out of the mountain environment before the snow and ice is a distant memory and it will no longer hold any interest for people. The local community and regular visitors to La Grave are right to be worried. It's not just old school charm that will be lost. The 'sport' of doom tourism is the preserve of the wealthy who will unwittingly, and quite simply, price the locals out of their home village. I've witnessed this here in the 3 Valleys ski area where locals now live almost exclusively in the villages and valleys below the ski resorts because they cannot afford to live in the resorts they work in. This last chance tourism contributes to two feedback loops: 👉 The first is that the fewer inhabitants in a resort, the smaller the community is who can come together to oppose the mounting number of developments that will continue to push the prices sky high. And so it will continue until ALL the beds in resort are cold*. 👉The second is that last chance tourism is creating more emissions that cause the earlier demise of the very wonders these tourists are coming to see. The more people that come, the quicker they will decline. They are adding nails to the coffin. Speaking with Gavin Fernie-Jones & Emma Crasnier about this yesterday, the situation seemed pretty bleak, but there are pockets of hope and people doing amazing things in the Alps. It's our job to find these stories, to shine a light on them and celebrate them. Sarisher Mann and Michael Shaw are doing this already with their film Green Mountain Pioneers. There are screenings coming up in the UK in the next few days. I'll post info in the comments. *cold beds refers to beds in accommodation that are only used for 3 weeks per year and are never rented out - a staggering 40% across the French Alps.
Piste off! Skiers fear new lift will threaten La Grave’s old school charm
