"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time..." Over the past year, the Northeastern PREF team and several external partners have worked tirelessly to investigate, plan, and execute the demolition of White Hall. It took a community to get this far. A big thank you to everyone involved as we reach this milestone! To learn more about the project, check out the attached article from Northeastern Global News. Tip: Water is undefeated; it can undermine even the most robust materials over time. Respect it, fear it, and most importantly, plan for its impact on your structures/systems. CONSTRUCTION: From the top Common sense says buildings are constructed from the ground up. However, Exchange Tower, in Detroit, Michigan, is the first use of the LIFTbuild approach in North America. It's a top-down construction method, in which each floor of the building - starting with the top floor - is fully assembled on the ground first and, then, lifted and fixed into place. This innovative approach is safer, because workers spend most of their time at ground level. And the method is also said to be more efficient - about 30 percent faster and up to 20 percent cheaper than conventional building methods. The fact that this 16-story project was built in Detroit is doubly meaningful. The city has struggled with population decline; some empty buildings have been demolished. "Exchange specifically is the first new construction in the central business district in the last several decades," real-estate agent Hannah Hoppough told FOX News. "I think this building is a huge win for the city." Reference: 6 /2024 Business Spotlight, page 11

The Mountain West is one of the largest and more diverse areas of the United States. Its rich landscape is both picturesque and iconic, bringing a culture that is founded on hard work and overcoming adversity. The area, also known as the Mountain States, is one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S. This growth, coupled with its unique landscape, provides the backdrop for some of the most innovative and interesting companies to flourish. PCI Mountain States represents manufacturers of precast and prestressed concrete in Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. It is an association with a unique history and an exciting future. Speaking about the main objective of the organization, Jim Schneider, LEED AP, Executive Director at PCI Mountain State said: “Basically our main objective is to grow the market share for precast in this part of the country.” For Schneider, the association’s work largely centers around developing and fostering relationships. “A lot of what we do is outreach to the design community, talking to architects, engineers, owners and contractors to educate them about the different potentials for the material and show them where it may fit. We help connect the design and construction community with our precasters and try to help facilitate those kinds of relationships that bring about projects for our members.” The association’s history is an interesting one. Founded in the 1980s, it was previously known as the Colorado Prestressers Association. Schneider explained that one man, Wally Priebus, established the association and laid the groundwork for a lot of precast work in the region. When he retired, the association went on a temporary hiatus. However, a few years later, members in the surrounding states speaking about reforming the organization in 2015. It was renamed PCI Mountain States, acknowledging the association’s broader reach, with John Dobbs stepping in as executive director. #Concrete #Precast #PrecastConcrete #ConcreteSolutions #SustainableConstruction #PrecastEngineering #OffsiteConstruction #IndustryCollaboration #DataCenters

The concept of making a network of waterway canals in the United Kingdom in the 16th and 18th centuries was to develop a way of efficiently transporting raw materials and manufactured goods from one part of the country to the next, without needing the more expensive horse drawn wagons. It was a major reason for the economic growth of the UK from the 1600's until the 1800's. When steam trains were invented, this bypassed the need for such waterways in many places especially when the rail network was expanded. https://lnkd.in/d7JTKyTd.

**Caen Hill Locks, Wiltshire** Nestled in the picturesque countryside of Wiltshire, the Caen Hill Locks stand as a testament to the ingenuity of early 19th-century engineering. This magnificent series of locks was completed in 1810 under the watchful eye of the esteemed engineer John Rennie the Elder. To accommodate the ambitious project, a brick-making factory was established nearby, ensuring a steady supply of the thousands of bricks needed to line the chambers of each lock. Comprising a total of 29 locks, the Caen Hill system stretches from Town Bridge to the lower lock at Lower Foxhangers. Among these, a standout feature is the impressive staircase of 16 locks, where enormous side pounds are ingeniously designed to hold vast quantities of water, allowing for the smooth and effective filling of the locks. By the mid-1950s, however, time had not been kind to this engineering marvel. The once-bustling canal had fallen into disrepair and was on the brink of abandonment. Yet, hope sprang forth in the form of passionate waterways enthusiasts who were determined to revive this historical waterway. In 1962, they banded together to form the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, a dedicated group committed to restoring the canal to its former glory. With the support of British Waterways (now known as the Canal & River Trust), a significant effort was undertaken to rehabilitate the locks and surrounding areas. Leaks were sealed, new lock gates were installed, and both the towpaths and bridges were carefully restored, culminating in the grand reopening of the canal in 1990. In a remarkable turn of fate, the restoration efforts received a substantial boost in 1996 when National Lottery funding poured in, amounting to an impressive £25 million. This critical investment helped finalize the extensive restoration and conservation work, ensuring that the Caen Hill Locks would remain a vibrant part of the local heritage. For those wishing to experience this engineering marvel, traversing the locks by boat is a journey that typically takes between 5 to 6 hours, offering a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty and history of the area.

🌆 Are Buildings Torn Down Too Soon?🏗️ In the world of demolition, timing is everything. At Total Controlled demolition, we're often asked if buildings are torn down too soon. It's a valid question and one worth exploring. Landscapes are constantly evolving, driven by the need for modern infrastructure, increased safety standards, sustainability, and economic growth. However, the decision to demolish a building isn't taken lightly. It involves a multitude of complex factors, including: 🔍 Structural Integrity: Older buildings can pose significant safety risks. Deterioration over time, coupled with outdated construction methods, can make renovation impractical or unsafe. 🌿 Environmental Impact: Demolition isn't just about tearing down; it's about making way for greener, more sustainable buildings. Modern construction can significantly reduce carbon footprints and energy consumption. 🏙️ Economic Viability: Sometimes, the cost of maintaining or upgrading an old building exceeds the benefits. New developments can stimulate local economies, providing jobs and revitalising communities. 💼 Functionality: As cities grow and change, so do their needs. Buildings designed for a past era might not suit contemporary requirements, making redevelopment a more functional choice. At Total Controlled Demolition Services, we're committed to responsible demolition practices that consider all these aspects. We work closely with planners, architects, and communities to ensure that our projects not only address current needs but also pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d7kJxNh Let's continue the conversation!
