More about the recent findings of H5N1 influenza in dairy cows in the US, which constitutes the first report ever of this viral subtype in cows. Some epidemiologists are concerned with the possibility that the virus is spreading directly between cattle. This time cows are actually getting sick, suffering gastrointestinal symptoms, loss of appetite, fever and reduced milk production. Compounding the problem, one epidemiologist at UTMB states that farmers in Texas are not collaborating with them to answer some important questions, including the mode of transmission of the virus. Farmers are apparently d concern that some findings could hurt business. #influenza #avianinfluenza #birdflu #USDA #Texas #Kansas #NewMexico #H5N1 #health #globalhealth #publichealth #medicine #CDC #WHO #FDA https://lnkd.in/gBCxhzF7

This is a very concerning event of cross over and subsequent intra species spread for a mammal that is of enormous importance to mankind. The probability now for the virus to effectively adapt to humans is now much greater, between spread to farm workers, dairy processing staff, and also virus making its way into milk and other food stuffs.

Farmers are not intelligent if their only concern is profitability. Seriously - if the institutions can conduct in-depth research, they could come up with a faster resolution such as a new vaccine that protects cows against influenza infection. When will people learn to work WITH science, not against it 🤦♂️ I mean, they’re so concerned about hurting their business - if the cows die, they’ll have no business.

Milk with shedded virus....not exactly great News for those who are Immunocompromised. And not cooperating or helping with the investigation is certainly unethical, and will hurt them more than not. Sooner or later.
