Been listening to Simu Liu's memoir, We Were Dreamers, and I've gotten to the part where he talks about his parents beating him... While many people might be aghast, this was just like my upbringing. Rolling pins to open palms. Feather dusters to backs of thighs. Kneeling on linoleum facing a corner. Those were simply normal occurrences. For tiger parenting. For children of immigrants. We were expected to be perfect. To make sense of the sacrifices our parents made for us. We were now expected to talk back. To have feelings. To fight back. That's precisely why I created my podcast. Because tiger parenting is still alive and well. And for someone who's been raised in two opposing cultures — Asian and American — we need people to see us. To hear us. To understand us. Because there are beautiful gifts from our family of origin. There are wonderful opportunities in the country where we were raised. There's also a lot of pain. When we feel seen and heard, we can articulate the healing that we need. May you find a resource that gives you the words, too. Latest episode of my F*ck Saving Face podcast is out now — includes chapters from the book I'm working on, "How to Disappoint Your Parents in 10 Shameless Steps: A Modern Asian American Guide." ** Listen on your favorite streaming platforms. Here's a clip from episode 112 ~ Unlocking Secrets: From Taboo Topics to Emotional Resilience — A Journey Through Asian American Identity. #aanhpi #aapi #bipoc #woc #authorscommunity #writing #booklaunch #podcastshow #podcasters

In this episode, Fawn and Matt revisit the purpose behind their podcast, reflecting on how friendship and societal relationships have been affected by division and disconnection. Fawn shares personal experiences, starting with childhood memories of observing cultural differences and strained family interactions. She recounts how, as a young child, she sought comfort and guidance from her family’s old photo albums, feeling a connection with ancestors through their portraits, which helped her understand and cope with the negativity around her. The conversation shifts to broader societal issues, with Fawn expressing concerns about forces that seem to undermine genuine relationships and community connections. She mentions her recent discovery of Saul Alinsky's controversial book, Rules for Radicals, which outlines tactics to destabilize systems. The tactics, Fawn suggests, mirror the divisive strategies she's observed over her lifetime. The couple plans to explore these tactics one by one, highlighting how they can prevent unity and affect friendships and communities. Matt and Fawn emphasize that their mission remains to foster healthy relationships, not just by identifying these tactics but by discussing ways to counteract them through awareness and positive action. #OurFriendlyWorldPodcast #FawnAndMatt #RelationshipBoundaries #SocialTactics #Resilience #EmpathyInFriendship #UnityInDiversity #SelfAwareness #UnderstandingCulture Relationship boundaries, Social influence tactics, Empathy in friendships, Personal resilience, Cultural dynamics, Collective mindset, Self-awareness and unity

The Saint John Institute was honored to be a guest on the Families of Character podcast with Jordan Langdon. Can you imagine a world where your teenagers not only want to go to church but find genuine value in their faith community? In this episode with Families of Character, Father Nathan and Jordan Langdon shed light on the challenges parents and grandparents face with their children's resistance to faith. Father Nathan shares practical strategies to create a united parental front, empathize with the teenage perspective, and involve them in meaningful faith-building activities like youth groups and service projects. Discover how calm, thoughtful conversations can address deeper issues, enabling teens to appreciate the significance of their faith journey. Ever thought of using everyday activities to elevate your family's spiritual experience? Explore how integrating simple practices like listening to classical music, walking in nature, or visiting art museums can deepen your family's connection with God. Father Nathan and I discuss how these enriching activities can instill values of aspiration and excellence in young minds. Through compelling personal anecdotes and cultural examples, we highlight how elevating beauty and goodness can guide children towards a profound, meaningful relationship with God. Finally, we emphasize the importance of taking back Sundays as a true day of rest and family connection. Instead of putting in a few hours of needless work, honoring Sabbath rest and prioritizing personal connection pays huge dividends when it comes to passing on the faith. Engaging in simple, hands-on activities like knitting or watching thunderstorms can build strong family bonds and create opportunities to share faith in relatable ways. Learn how demonstrating forgiveness and generosity in everyday moments teaches children the values of kindness and compassion. By involving kids in family giving and integrating faith into daily routines, parents can become a bridge to God, nurturing a strong, faith-filled family culture. Tune in for actionable advice and inspiring stories to help your family grow together in faith. To connect with Father Nathan, check out his website and his new book.
