We are excited to announce our third co-hosted satellite event during Ocean Decade Week: “The inclusivity we need for the Ocean we want” 📆 Tuesday 9 April ⏰ 14:30 - 16:30 📍Barcelona Capital Nautica 📬 RSVP: https://lnkd.in/dah35VMQ 🌎 More information: This satellite event seeks to identify the systemic barriers that lead to the exclusion of underrepresented groups and communities, thus preventing true inclusivity in ocean conservation and governance. On that basis, the event will facilitate discussions around concrete ways to include and amplify the voices of underrepresented groups in high-level national and international fora, spanning from nations in the Global North and the Global South. A major outcome of this discussion is a list of joint statements and recommendations to be considered in high-level processes. Join us in Barcelona to address this crucial topic and be a catalyst for change through action-oriented discussions. RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/dah35VMQ

At the conclusion of my experience, I would like to share what I have learned while working for two months on a reforestation project in Portugal: it is imperative to establish a new understanding of the relationship between humanity and nature, starting from the grassroots level, acknowledging that which gives life to everything – the soil.

Last Sunday (2024/05/19) I had the absolute pleasure of hosting a light trapping session for members of the public on the margins of Rio Leça (Matosinhos, Porto). This session was part of a larger, two-weekend-long, BioBlizt-like event, organized by Corredor do Rio Leça - AM and Floradata - Biodiversidade, Ambiente e Recursos Naturais, Lda and taking place in different spots of the margins of Rio Leça, spanning four municipalities (Santo Tirso, Valongo, Maia and Matosinhos). The main goal was to put citizens in contact with nature in and around this river, exploring not only the animal kingdom, but plants and fungi as well. Though the duration of the light trapping session was short (about 1h) and the spot I ended up choosing was sub-optimal, the participants and I still managed to observe a dozen species of insects and other invertebrates, from Ruby Tiger Moths to Darwin Wasps. The stars (pun unintended) of the event made their sparkling presence known shortly after sundown: Portuguese Fireflies (Luciola lusitanica)! I rarely ever see fireflies, let alone in urban-park-like environments, with paved roads and street lights every 5 or 10 meters. It was surely a sight to behold to all of us, a first for some and a nostalgic sight for others. I wonder what other spectacular creepy-crawlies are out there, hidden amongst the bushes and grasses that cover the margins of Leça River.

Last month, REN ⚡ and Renewables Grid Initiative ⚡ hosted a workshop in Porto, Portugal, bringing together 40 experts from 12 countries to discuss Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM). The event combined talks and field visits to projects focused on species protection, fire prevention, and community benefits. Day 1 included visits to projects supporting endangered Garrano horses and revitalizing the Ermelo orange, both of which demonstrate how #IntegrateNature can reduce fire risks, protect biodiversity, and benefit local communities. Day 2 featured discussions on biodiversity monitoring, fire prevention, and bird protection, and helped to identify priorities for the working group. The passion and dedication shown by colleagues responsible for truly integrated management is incredible. 🌍 #biodiversity #biodiversity #wildlife #conservation #nature #wildlifeconservation #protectourplanet #environment #naturelovers #energy #energytransition #renewables

In Norway, a tourist was fined 1,000 euros for getting too close to a walrus, The Independent reports. The point is that the Svalbard archipelago has a law according to which any movement must be carried out in such a way as not to damage the environment and cultural monuments. This fine is a reminder of the strict environmental regulations in place in regions like Svalbard, where the balance of nature is fragile and must be preserved. As visitors, it's our responsibility to respect these rules, ensuring that wildlife, such as walruses, are not disturbed by our presence. The link to the article is in the first comment.

Renewable energy is the future
Seychelles is a relatively tiny country, and it has the world's smallest capital, Victoria. But it also is home to some enormous living things: Esmerelda is the planet's heaviest land tortoise living in the wild — she weighs 670 pounds — and a nut called the coco de mer, found here, produces the largest seed in the world, which can weigh up to 33 pounds. Seychelles was one of 10 island countries or territories to attend the second cohort of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program in Hawaii in May, which convened island leaders to help share information that could put them on the path to a 100% renewable-energy future. We are delighted to announce that our documentary "The Forest You Don't See – Narratives from the Middle Xingu" has been selected to participate in the International Migration and Environment Film Festival (IMEFF), one of the largest festivals in the world raising awareness about migration and environmental issues. This documentary is a co-production between our team in Brazil from Synergia Consultoria Socioambiental and Dot Films, with support from Instituto Chico Mendes De Conservacao Da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The event is being held online from October 9 to 15. It offers an unmissable and fantastic opportunity for those who want to learn more about how to make the world a better place for everyone, as well as about climate change, pollution, habitat loss, forced migration and even human trafficking. This festival allows us to reach a wider audience globally, amplifying the voices of local communities who help us to understand their deep connection to the forest and the challenges they face in preserving it. New paper led by Anne Cadoret using tools from the FIDELIO project: Social Acceptance and Marine Protected Areas: Lessons from Port-Cros National Park Our study highlights the critical role of social acceptance in the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Focusing on Port-Cros National Park in France, one of Europe's oldest marine parks, the paper examines how local communities’ support impacts conservation efforts. With 569 survey responses, the research identifies key factors influencing acceptance: perceived social impacts, trust in management, sociodemographic factors, and opportunities for public participation. 🌄 Wilderness refers to those parts of nature that have not been altered by humans and over which human influence is low. Wilderness includes wildlife, the unaltered abiotic environment, as well as a wilderness quality. The latter is best illustrated by that feeling you get when traveling alone in nature, that you are far removed from any trace of human presence; that it is just you and nature. 📝For more than 𝟏𝟐 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, we have been involved in 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. We have always tried to emphasize this experience in all our projects, understanding that wilderness is nature’s most valuable feature and that its protection and restoration is an important condition for sustainable socio-economic development. 🌎𝐀𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟐𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬.
