This is a fascinating article, showing not just the importance of having more men working in childcare, but also addressing the way we label those working in the sector. Making the subtle title change from 'practitioner' to 'teacher' not only shows the amount of care and training involved in working with young children, but also the important role it has in society. 👨👨👧👦 A significant shortage of wraparound childcare in the UK is severely impacting parents’ ability to work to their full potential, according to new research by childcare provider Koru Kids. 📚 ✏ The study reveals that nearly two-thirds (61%) of parents could work more hours if after-school care were more accessible, with the figure rising to 71% for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). https://bit.ly/4eCd5u5 #ReedBusinessSupport #SEND #WorkingParent #Childcare #Productivity

Last week, the Commonwealth Government announced several measures to expand access to early childhood education and care for all families. It will guarantee 3 days per week of childcare for each child under 5, by removing the activity test for those days. And it will invest $1 billion in expanding the number of childcare centres and places, with a particular focus on under-served and unserved areas. This is sensible policy, which will benefit disadvantaged children and households the most. Aruna Sathanapally and I wrote about these measures in the AFR earlier this week.
Lifting the activity test for early childhood education will help disadvantaged families. It’s an important step on the path to universal childcare in Australia, write Aruna Sathanapally and Jessica Geraghty. https://buff.ly/4gek7oZ #auspol #ausecon #childcare #earlychildhood

Single parents tell us that being unable to access or afford childcare is one of the biggest barriers to them finding and staying in work. We welcome the creation of more childcare places - particularly in childcare deserts - but it goes deeper than this. Currently, single parents who are training, re-training or studying aren't entitled to the same childcare support as those in work, this must change to allow single parents to reach their full potential. In addition, too many single parents are locked out of work or stuck in low paid jobs that they're over qualified for just because these roles offer flexibility - which is essential when you're parenting alone. We need all political parties to consider the needs of single parents in their manifestos and beyond. Otherwise, we'll end up with a two-tier society with single parent families stuck firmly at the bottom. https://lnkd.in/e7Hs97fw

"As nurseries grapple with ever-tightening budgets, the inevitable consequence is a reduction in staff salaries and the employment of less expensive and, therefore, less qualified staff. This downward spiral not only undermines the value of early years as a career, but also compromises the quality of education and care provided for children at a stage which research shows is critical to their development. This could have consequences for their long-term wellbeing and fulfilment of their potential", says Louise Livingston, our Head of Training.
