Autumn leaves and the compounds that cause their colours What a lovely time of year—when the leaves of deciduous trees in many forests change from the deep greens of summer to the yellows, oranges and reds of fall. But what makes the leaves change colour, and what compounds are responsible for Nature's spectacular display? We all know the magical green chlorophyll, but leaves also contain carotenoids. As the chlorophyll fades, the golden oranges of these carotenoids start to shine through. You may recognise one carotenoid, beta-carotene, from carrots. Another carotenoid, xanthophyll, is responsible for the beautiful bright yellows. The leaves of some trees also produce anthocyanin as Autumn begins, which gives beautiful deep reds. You can find this sketch, lovingly polished, in the book Big Ideas Little Pictures.

#CloudArchitecture, #WellArchitected What happens when a cloud architect goes on a hike in the Ardennes? He meditates on what he learnt in the years of observing nature and architecting cloud solutions. I wrote the following muse in the Green Ogre blogpost about my hike in the Ardennes. I realize this thought was a result of years as a well-architected practitioner. “Comparison is criminal. Comparison reduces masterpieces into a single frame of reference. It robs uniqueness from diversity. A weight scale balances a kilogram of gold against an equal measure of cast iron in weight. The needle cares less about the strength of the iron or the malleability of gold, for all it cares about is the interplay between mass and gravitational pull.” Stitching together multiple perspectives, viewpoints and frame of references to create one unified solution brings joy to cloud architects. The skeptics might argue that using multiple perspectives, viewpoints and frames of references is after-all another form of comparison. But the difference between using a single frame of reference vs multiple frames of reference, is that answer from the first one is “which is better”, the answer from the second one is “which is most suited”. Single dimensional comparison robs cloud architects of the most powerful stroke from our repertoire - the ability to make trade-offs. Ability to focus on well-architected pillars and apply well-architected lenses to cloud workloads is an unexplainable bliss of architecting. Thank you The Green Ogre for offering a oasis for my meditations.
