Excited to announce: 'Singing the Psyche' book is now available-

'Singing the Psyche elucidates, renews, and advances one of the most important traditions in art healing--spontaneous and full bodied vocal expression. It is essential reading for those engaging the voice and models how to undertake in-depth and truly art-based exploration of a particular form of creative expression within the larger and interdependent community of art healing' - Shaun McNiff, Author and Pioneer of Expressive Arts Therapy
In the last of our Introductory Lectures (Wednesday 3 July) https://lnkd.in/dkJrgjra psychoanalyst Shawm Tower will briefly summarise various psychoanalytic approaches to creativity and art.
Although Freud himself did not propose a specific theory on creativity, his model of mental functioning, comprising ‘primary and secondary processes’, will be seen here as a prism through which subsequent psychoanalytic theories can be compared.
A few images from the visual arts will be included as an emotional and associative response to concepts of creativity within psychoanalysis.
In this lecture, part Freud Museum London's Freud's 4 pm Sessions series, Mark Solms addresses the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness, taking the view that we have made so little progress with this problem because we have been focusing on the wrong sort of consciousness (perception and cognition) and the wrong part of the brain (the cortex). Professor Solms argues that the problem becomes less hard when considered in relation to affect and the brainstem. He also discusses the relevance of two Freudian ideas to the solution of the problem.

Arthur has challenged the conventional notion of art by reshaping people’s perspectives of art with the concept of “End of art”. According to him, anything can be termed art, if it holds any meaning and thus, is not bound by historical progression.
Danto’s work moved the conversation about art from beauty and appearance to context and understanding, which laid the foundation of a broader phenomenon of art.
His philosophical journey began after his encounter with Warhol’s Brillo, leading to his seminal essay, “The Artworld”.
He served as an art critic for “The Nation” where he actively contributed to the debate of contemporary art. His writing related to art is unique and accessible to those interested in art.
Danto’s ideas have paved the way for new avenues. Today we are remembering him for his distinct ideology which will endure here for a lifetime.

Aleph to DNA: The Healing Power of Form
Streamed live on Mar 23, 2024, from Beyond Baroque, Venice, California
By showing a history of my paintings I present a visual chronology of the discovery process of alphabetic morphology in nature and how it correlates with and affirms various scientific, ecological, sociological, psychiatric, and psychophysiological ideas and practices all moving towards the greater good. This visual one-hour multidisciplinary presentation melds the inner and outer worlds into a dialogic question – do we see because of what we think of do we think because of what we see.
What a great webinar by the members of the IPA! So many insights. It is the centenary of Freud’s brilliant essay, The Ego and the Id. Just a small snippet by Dr Gohar Homayounpour:
“The superego is not the voice of an ethical authority, but simply that of an authority… it is an unrelenting command; one that we never satisfy. The more you try, the guiltier you become… we are a priori guilty beings. The superego is not related to the external, but to the internal object relations, and not to reality.”
The superego is the heir to the oedipus complex. The dissolution of the oedipus complex produces a father-identification that preserves the object-relation to the mother and a mother-identification that preserves the object-relation to the father. These 2 identifications combined forms the precipitate and modification of the ego, along with its reaction formations that we refer to as the superego.
In the Christian tradition there is a projection of the superego onto the body of Christ, where the punishment of death and hell is the only outcome for an a priori guilty sinner. There seems to me to be a message of decathexis from the narcissistic ego with an infantile regression to a symbiotic fusion with the omnipotent Father: An acension towards the ego-ideal. If I am correct in my understanding, then it will also align with Freud’s other great work, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, where he states that all instinct has an innate tendency toward reinstatement of an earlier condition. The instinct is regressive and conservative: the goal of all life is death.
I may be wrong (and blasphemous) in my interpretations and I welcome your insights.
New publication out now.
PERFORMANCE ART AND REVOLUTION: STUART BRISLEY'S CUTS IN TIME.
BY SANJA PEROVIC, MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY PRESS.
Stuart Brisley is a pioneering multi-media and performance artist who developed performance art as a form of social action in the 1960s and 1970s. This book assesses his seminal influence on British art through a focus on his lifelong engagement with the histories and imaginaries of revolution.
Linking revolutionary history with material from a critical dialogue established with Brisley over the last decade, the book recognises Brisley's corpus as a fascinating stage for addressing important questions about the relationship of art, politics and history. How do we make sense of politically committed art in a contemporary context where revolution has supposedly died or is deemed impossible? What can the afterlives of performance art tell us about the historical past, including the promises and contradictions of revolutionary time?
Sanja Perovic is a Reader in Eighteenth-Century French Studies at King's College London.
The "Look! This Is My Faith" exhibition has been a testament to the power of art in expressing and exploring complex theological ideas. Through the collaborative efforts of talented artists, we have opened new avenues for research and dialogue in theology and cognitive science.

➡️In the realm of art therapy, the connections between space and environment, reflection, and art making are deeply intertwined, each playing a vital role in the therapeutic process!
➡️The physical and emotional space where therapy occurs is fundamental. A well-designed environment that feels safe and inviting allows clients to relax and open up, making them more receptive to the therapeutic work. The arrangement and accessibility of art materials within this space further enhance the creative process, encouraging exploration and expression.
