Knitting is a craft that has existed for centuries. What would you say if you were to be asked, "When you think of knitting, what first comes to mind?" Some things one might say is that knitting is a craft, they have a family member that knits, or that there's yarn involved. Rarely ever would one say, "Knitting helps me understand spatial reasoning and fluid dynamics." That is, unless you're Megan Chong. This article details Megan Chong's sewing and knitting and how it connects to her STEM research, specifically around spatial reasoning. She touches on how those who excelled in apparel design courses did better on spatial visualization tests, how crafting can prevent age-related spatial reasoning decay, and how other scientists have utilized crafting in their areas of expertise. The attached article, "Can Knitting Help Teach Science?," is an informative, yet entertaining, read on how scientists have turned to crafting to further their research. MEET THE MAKER Seeing as I’ve introduced my new branding and new look Needles & Fred, it’s time for me to introduce myself! I’m the Fred part of Needles & Fred. My husband named my small business for me, so all credit goes to him, my silent partner and yarn unwinder! So, who am I? What I am is passionate about crochet, I discovered this craft in 2017, after struggling with knitting. It seemed that working with one crochet hook, was easier than working with two knitting needles. My dad taught me to knit when I was about seven, but I never really ventured past making scarves. I picked up knitting needles again when I was in my late thirties, after my mum bought me and my sisters a scarf knitting kit for Christmas one year. I made a very wonky scarf, but I loved making it and found the whole process very therapeutic. However, once again, I didn't really stray outside making scarves or square and rectangular shapes that could be sewn together as garments. My mum suggested I tried crochet instead. She set me up with a 4mm crochet hook, some yarn and an old 'how to crochet' book that she'd found on her bookshelf. I struggled to start with because all the illustrations were right-handed and I'm left-handed. I found it difficult to convert the images to left-handed, so I finally Googled 'left-handed crochet' and found the most amazing, easy to follow tutorials from Bella Coco Crochet and I was literally hooked. I started off with 'all the gear, no idea' but I started to study the art of crochet properly, learning the basics from foundation chains, increasing, decreasing, gauge and so on. I followed as many online tutorials as I could and bought books to study and try new techniques. I also took a diploma course in crochet! I now want to turn this passion into my day job, making beautiful unique pieces for people to buy and enjoy themselves, and writing crochet patterns for other crocheters to enjoy. It’s a real process, but I am really enjoying it so far. I have a wonderful team of pattern testers behind me, guiding me all the way and helping me to improve my writing and crochet techniques. I am always crocheting for someone else, so sometimes I have to stop and remind myself to make something for me. So far, I've made a lovely Mandala cardigan to wear and am currently making a poncho that might be finished by the time I'm sixty! I'm hooked on circular needles. 🪝 And I'm not alone! At our Sip'N'Knit last week at Winemak'her Bar, every participant at Knit Along* used circular needles. For most people, the classic picture of knitting is the following scene: 🎞 A grandmother 👵, in a cozy armchair, near the fireplace 🔥. Probably a cat 🐈 sleeping by her feet, close to the balls of yarn 🧶. She holds two long straight sticks, and her fingers dance around the stitches at the rhythm of the metallic "clicks". 𝐴𝑚 𝐼 𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡? There are many myths to debunk here, but I'll start with the tools! What are 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀? 𝐺𝑙𝑎𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑠𝑘! They are made with tapered needle tips, relatively short, connected by a flexible cable of various lengths. There are 3 main benefits of circular needles: 1️⃣ 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: They are appropriate for both knitting in the round and flat knitting techniques. In fact, you benefit from the cable length to hold your stitches for large projects like blankets. 2️⃣ 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: It is easier to manage your project to your personal space with smaller needle tips. You can easily knit in quite contained places like in the subway, the bus, on a plane... My friend Stephen Paquette is now taking his knitting on hikes! 3️⃣ 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲: Take your project out even for a short time. Knit a few stitches, and push all the stitches on the cable when it's time to put it away (hello waiting rooms without scrolling on your phone). You can safely tuck your project away, the stitches will sit patiently on the cable until you return to them.  💬❓Knitters here, what kind of needles do you prefer? Your needles are magic wands. You know in Harry Potter, every wizard 🧙♂️ or witch 🧙♀️is matched to a wand 🪄? Well, it's much easier with knitting needles. As far as I know, none contain dragon 🐉 phoenix 🦆, or snake 🐍 extracts. However, they are made of different materials. From bamboo to steel, aluminum to rosewood, carbon... and plastic. How do we choose? 𝐺𝑙𝑎𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑠𝑘! Let's get through them a little. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 🪣: often used for beginners and kids. It offers 2 key benefits: it is very affordable and lightweight. 𝐵𝑢𝑡... that's plastic... not so great for the 🌍. 𝗕𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗼🎋: Also recommended for beginners. They offer lightness and flexibility, helping those who can experience pain or hand and wrist fatigue. Bamboo needles have a good grip, preventing stitches from slipping too easily. 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱 🌳🪵 (birch, rosewood, maple...): very comfortable because they are lightweight, warm in your hands, and slightly more slippery than bamboo to gain some fluidity. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 🛠️: steel and aluminum. They are very durable and quite sturdy. They are smooth if you want to gain some pace in your knitting rhythm. They remain quite cold in your hands. A little bonus for aluminum that is lighter. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 🦾: they are quite new on the market and are quite the "Rolls Royce" of knitting needles. They are definitely more expensive of course. Lightweight, flexible, durable, smooth, and flexible, carbon also helps with temperature regulation. Learning a new skill will thicken your brain's prefrontal cortex, increase brain's white matter and stimulate your neurons (that will in turn form more neural pathways). Learning new things does wonders for our cognitive and neurological development. Not to say anything about the positive effect it can have on our emotional, psychological and mental state. What new skills have I acquired as an adult? Well, a few year years back I took a course in fashion design, tailoring and sewing with a local fashion designer Stanka Zovko. I'm really happy I did because not only did I enjoy it, I also gained new skills. Sewing is such an useful skill! So, here it is: the first dress I have ever made entirely by myself! I did make some summer dresses in the past, but I had sown them without a pattern and a sewing machine. I mean it was sort of impressive that I managed to sew a dress by hand even before taking a sewing class. However, I wouldn't call those 'early' dresses very accomplished. I mean, they weren't as polished as this dress. I'm very happy with how this dress turned out. I'm even happier I took this sewing course in the first place because now I can make more dresses like this one! This is the dress I made for my sewing course 'graduation'. At the end of this lovely sewing course, you get to choose not only what you're going to make, but also the material and the pattern. The sewing pattern is typically chosen from one of the sewing magazines this designer has in its studio, but you can bring your own. I have chosen this dress from Burda (German edition, I'm not sure about the year but it was a newer edition). As you probably know, Burda Style is an international fashion magazine published in 16 different languages and many many countries (not sure how many actually). The Burda magazine was originally founded in Germany, and it is still published there regularly. I examined tons of magazines, and I loved browsing the vintage ones. Especially the local vintage Burda editions I never knew existed in the first place. However, when I saw this dress I knew it was the one. Nevertheless, I made quite a few alterations to the original pattern found in Burda, so I'm not sure you'd recognize this dress if you saw it there. The original dress came in a vibrant print, but I choose this grey material because it was more classic and versatile. Moreover, the original dress has shorter sleeves, a bigger cleavage and was not nearly as long. I don't typically wear cleavage at all, so I made some changes. I also opted for a longer midi length because I thought that would make it look more interesting.
