Part II | The Possibilities of Historical Reinterpretation Part II, encompassing various explorations of issues related to the renovation and restoration, reinterpretation and reconstruction of historic architecture, and through such diverse design research and theoretical depictions, provides examples concerning urban and spatial potentials as well as humanistic and historical reinterpretation possibilities within the realm of contemporary architectural design, aiming to enrich its methodology and vocabulary, ultimately leading to more profound and diversified practices. In this part, the focuses range from central historic urban blocks to contemporary historical urban districts in Guangzhou, and even broader indigenous areas in China, covering examples from the renovation of specific conserved architectural entities, the evolution of historical urban neighborhoods, to the reinterpretation of abstract principles from Chinese traditional architecture, and the further introduction of propositions for the revitalization of representative post-industrial areas in the United States. Studio Zhu-Pei, which was established in Beijing in 2005, dedicates itself to experimental work and research in the field of contemporary architecture, art and culture. Through its innovative approach, the team around #ZhuPei examines the deep connection between the roots of a work – embedded in a specific form of nature or culture – and innovative design on an ongoing basis. Parallel to Zhu Pei’s experimental practice and teaching activities, the studio has developed its own architectural theory: an ‘Architecture of nature’. This theory represents not only a poetics of building, but also a reaction to the challenges associated with global climate change and regional cultural upheaval. The projects shown in the exhibition ‘Poetic Imaginations’ at Aedes were created on the basis of the theory developed by Zhu Pei and illustrate how the theoretical considerations were translated into architecture. Ling, AIA, draws a compelling parallel to Vitruvius, the ancient Roman architect whose Ten Books on Architecture have influenced the field for centuries. Just as Vitruvius documented the architectural standards and practices of his time, Ling captures the contemporary essence of architectural care and responsibility, ensuring that today's architects have a solid foundation to build upon. Vitruvius meticulously described the design norms and construction processes of his era, establishing a benchmark for future generations. Rome figures in histories of nineteenth-century architecture, if at all, mainly as an inert backdrop for the Romantic reveries of northern visitors. Chicago is world famous as the 'birthplace' of the skyscraper, one of the first forms of modern architecture. Did you know it is also the city where the American economist Thorstein Veblen wrote his classic text, The Theory of the Leisure Class? Published in 1899, this book takes aim at what would later be known as 'consumer culture.' In my new book, fresh off the press and available April 2nd, I examine Veblen's book (and his famous concept of 'conspicuous consumption), in the context of Chicago.
